This is a toughie could be good could be awful ,looks like KBS thought "hmm lets remake Princess Man only change male female roles and set it in Goguryeo ".

The title reminds me of a comic about Hwarang I was working on until I dropped it. Blood Stained Flowers

I have not seen Princess Man. I'm hoping this will be good. I will not mind them playing fast and loose with the historical accuracy as long as they tell a good story. That's all I ask for - a good entertaining story.

Episode 1 . . . . . . . . . . . Well............. not quite sure what to make of this.
It reminded me of one of those European "art" movies where every scene is beautifully constructed and shot, but nothing happens. No wonder it's subbed already - there can't have been more than 10 or so lines of dialog per character.
This is a love story after all, so I guess I shouldn't complain that the sappy music has already started.
First nomination for the Incredulity Award - The prince and princess were unable to ID UTW by his clothing after the prisoner was shot? Jeepers, the prince was standing right next to him in the room where he had just seen him shooting arrows.
Why do these characters always have a table of good-looking food in front of them, but they never eat it?

Just watched the 1st episode. I thought I'd give it a shot since I haven't been watching any sageuks ever since Great King's Dream ended.
I skipped all the romance parts even though that is supposed to be the main focus of the drama and mostly just watched the scenes with Choi Min Soo and Kim Young Cheol since scenes involving them are the only parts with historical aspect. Here are some pros and cons
Pros
1. Kim Young Cheol and Choi Min Soo's acting. Loving the rivalry between Young Ryu and YGSM. Kim Young Cheol's King Young Ryu is way better than the SBS YGSM's version. Choi Min Soo's YGSM is also great. I think it's almost as good as KBS Dae Jo Young's YGSM or even better. It feels a little weird to see a new YGSM just a month after Great King's Dream ended with its own version of YGSM doing nothing but sitting in a palace.
2. No fantasy armors. Goguryeo armor is same as the ones used in King Geunchogo and Great King's Dream
3. No light in the palace during both day and night. I hated how all the palaces in sageuks were so bright as if they had florescent light in the ancient days. This is the first sageuks I've seen in 10 years without the strong lighting in the palace.
4. The best Goguryeo palace, or even the best Three Kingdom era palace in sageuk history in my opinion. I sighed everytime I saw palaces as big as my room in Great King's Dream.
Cons
1. There are only four historical figures in this drama so far and most people in the drama are all fictional including the main characters.
2. Yeon Gaesomoon lives in a Joseon dynasty style housing
3. Some portraits from Joseon dynasty were shown
4. Goguryeo officials are wearing what the Shilla officials were wearing in Great King's Dream
5. Uhm Tae Woong(lead actor) should never do a sageuk. He was boring in QSD and he is boring here. He should just stick to dramas in modern setting.
6. Kim Oak Bin(lead actress) sucks at acting
7. Fantasy Characters that look like the Goguryo version of Gwimoon from Great King's Dream
8. Crappy choice of background music
I think I'm going to watch the drama at least until YGSM's coup gets rid of King Young Ryu(Kim Young Cheol) or might even watch it till the end just because I like Choi Min Soo's YGSM. Either way, I'm going to be skipping through all the main story(romance scenes) and only watch the few historical parts of the drama.

Well, I am still trying to figure this show out. Leaving aside historical accuracy (or lack thereof) this show could be terrific or really stink. Still can't tell. The strangest thing to me is the portrayal of YGS to date. Yes, I'll agree the actor is charismatic. But look at the character - just about every scene he's in, he is shot looking frail, weak, listless, in pain, lifeless (and he looks like he never grooms his hair). No inkling of strength or power. Not the YGS I'd expect. I'm looking forward to him actually standing tall and DOING something.
Does anyone else think he's kind of ... off?

Episodes 3 and 4 . . . . . . . . Much better than the first 2 episodes. There was some genuine suspense and YGS seems to be showing signs of life. But the assassin dude - who would walk around looking like that? I would think he'd want to blend into his surroundings.

^The assassin dude reminds me of a design I did of a slasher villain wearing a a baekjeong mask

Up through Episode 7... . . . . . Well, I thought this show was doing pretty well in the Sageuk Cliché department: No one has jumped off a cliff. No one has marched his army through a ravine only to be ambushed. No slave gladiators. No silly maids. No dim-witted buddies. No queens fighting over which son gets to be the next king. But then tonight - The Magic Hat of Invisibility made its first appearance! One-tenth deduction to the writers for this sloppiness.

This show is doing very badly in the ratings though, even worse than Great King's Dream. This show has 3% ratings right now, while the lowest rating for Great King's Dream was 7%. I think the biggest reason for bad ratings is due to the extremely slow pace, which makes it kind of boring. I find myself yawning everytime there is some scene with stupid violin music and a character doing nothing but gazing at the camera for 3 minutes. Second, there are only 4 historical figures in this drama. I know that not everyone watch sageuks for history, but there are some viewers who want to watch sagueks just for history. The only historical part so far was YGSM's coup.

No coughing up blood.
I'm not surprised at the low ratings. This is not your typical sageuk, and the first couple of episodes especially were extremely slow and "arty". The pace is beginning to pick up, and YGS actually smiled for a few seconds in the last episode. Maybe he's not a zombie after all. When the piano and violin music start, I play a game of freecell and try to ignore the sappy love songs.
