Korean Students Speak is a project started by English Teaching Assistants in Korea. The idea is for Korean students to express whatever is on their mind on a blank sheet of paper. Some of the messages are more serious than others. It's simple but this is one of the best school projects I've come across. koreanstudentsspeak.tumblr.com

All I can say is "Wow".... I had tears in my eyes whenever I read about someone wanting to go home or saying that they just want to sleep or some of the comments about how testing is hard or that education in korea needs to change. The comments from the blind students made me feel that they don't get treated very fairly. Or how one student said they were not short or another wanted big eyes....... made me feel sad that all I want is to watch Korean dramas on TV makes me wonder what the students in my neighborhood would say? I guess we are not soo differnt no matter where we live... I was glad to see some not so serious comments to help balance it all out

I had the same reaction, bird--there were a lot of touching sentiments in there. And some of the education-related ones were very interesting. One thing that fascinated me was the number of them that chose to say that the disputed island that Korea and Japan have been arguing about belongs to Korea. What an odd choice of message for a schoolkid! The schools must be hitting them pretty hard with the propaganda.
Thanks for finding that, Knov.

I have to wonder if the kid who wrote "I want big eyes" is making a political statement about rampant plastic surgery. Really a good page, knov1. Thanks.
I wonder if they happen to be studying the dispute about Dokdo. And the many complaints about too much studying--rather touching.

I have to wonder if the kid who wrote "I want big eyes" is making a political statement about rampant plastic surgery. I think he's just saying he wants big eyes. Having big eyes is one of the Korean standards for beauty. There's various types of eyelid procedures that have become common for making ones eyes bigger. Google "Asian Blepharoplasty" for more info on it. Those that can't afford it or don't want to go under the knife will use contact lenses known as Circle Lens. They're popular in Asia. They make the iris appear bigger.

I know all that, lol. I meant, he's about the age when kids start to notice stupid social mores and comment on them. I have decided to hope that's what he was trying to do, because I wish people would wake up and be happy with their looks.

I have always been creeped out by the big eyes phenomenon.

I understand what you're saying but I don't think there's more to it than what he wrote on the sheet of paper. If that's what he had meant, I believe he would have just said so.
