More than one K Drama's final episode used to use this convenience to end their story. A little frustrating after following 50 episodes or more in real time. Now I find it "3 years later" from the last time I did any regular posting on this board. How convenient. I'm going strictly from memory here, so forgive me if I have some of my facts wrong.
It's a long time away from "Iron Empress", when taunts of "Kimmy-Sue" peppered posters' comments along with AJK's summary sarcasms and "constructive" (read funny) criticisms. Good times. "Love and Obsession" was also a guilty pleasure on air when the ax fell. I imagine I wasn't the only one who wasn't able to see either of these dramas continue to their endings.
In the aftermath of the KBS debacle the smoke cleared only to reveal a new network: Arirang on channel 41 instead of our familiar KBC programming. Did I mention I bought a cable box with analog pass through so I could continue to watch channel 41?
I didn't care for Arirang. When you watch Arirang, you get annoyed. When you get annoyed, you want to break something, When you break something, you end up hurting yourself and have to go to the ER. When you go to the ER, they give you a sedative so you stop screaming and fall asleep. When you wake up from the sedative, you're in a hospital bed and missing a kidney. Don't wake up in a hospital bed missing a kidney. Don't watch Arirang.
So I turned to my local library and found lots of foreign movie dvds subtitled in English. A handful of Korean, a lot of Chinese and Japanese so I began watching those. Several were above average, so I started a thread here in the hope some of you might fill the void until we had some sort of resolution. It seemed to work for me. Gradually I was weaned off k-dramas to the point where I resumed playing tennis again. Actual exercise instead of remaining a couch potato. I rediscovered there were people in the world who had names other than Kim or Lee, and stopped saying "yobe sayo" to every Korean looking person I happened to see wherever I went.
Meanwhile back on the "new" tv, I stumbled onto a new channel, 20.3 on my "dial" which was showing a Korean drama with English subs! They were showing on Thursday evenings. I watched "Alone in Love" and "Someday". Loved AIL, Someday, not as much. After these both ended, two new dramas followed: "I Love You" and "Grand Chef" (One of the weirdest endings ever?) Okay, so not the greatest, but we're back in business with some new offerings. What's next?
Alone in Love, Someday. I Love You, Grand Chef. Alone in Love, Someday. Argh! Reruns! I have no idea if they ever did offer anything new as I lost interest and didn't check out their channel anymore after that. Tennis. More tennis. More and more tennis. Winter.
Now in the last year or so KUBS/WIN TV is broadcasting MBC dramas. They're not without their problems, specifically with subs unintelligible, out of sync, from a wrong episode, or missing altogether, but overall the quality is good with several familiar faces in typical story lines we were accustomed to on 41. Reception is occasionally problematic, as are the wacky start times which vary from day to day, week to week, but I put up with it. At the moment, I'm watching "Soldier", a historical, "I Do, I Do", a romantic, and somewhat following a daily called "I Can't Live Without You", or as I call it: "Dork and Mindu". I used to be able to record on the old channel, but can't with the digital system. Besides, *everyone* else has a smart phone, ipad or kindle nowadays, so who watches tv on a tv anymore? Downloading is the new recording. Did I mention I'm on dial up?
I miss a lot of the posters from years past. Back then I was reading every day and couldn't wait for what would be said next after that day's episode aired. So many had insightful comments, along with some that were hilariously critical, and several more came up with classic nicknames arising from character idiosyncrasies. Who can forget Cornea Girl, Chicken Walk Mom, or Coma Doc? It was a lot more fun when we were watching "together" even tho we all were watching separately. Nowadays I feel like I'm the only one watching any of these shows.
I still maintain the whole reason KBS went under was so that I wouldn't make "wang".
