MOE Ep.11
Rather than recount things in order, I’ll deal with each situation as it played out. It’s a pivotal episode, so this synopsis is a little long.
Jangil introduces himself to David Kim; “Good to see you, Jangil,” says the blind man. [ROFL.] In his initial conference with Jangil’s staff, David/Sunwoo states that although the company they are investigating appears to be perpetuating a fraud, it may not be so. Jangil follows him out and challenges him about their café meeting. Sunwoo says he was just trying to surprise him with good news (not being blind). Later, Sunwoo calls Jangil privately to tell him that the mining company, for a certainty, are crooks. Jangil asks why he didn’t just say that earlier. Sunwoo “wants to help Jangil look like a genius and further his career.” So after a bit, Jangil makes a public announcement that the mining company manipulated stock prices with false statements.
Jangil’s colleague (Sunho—see note below) is investigating President Jin and questions Jangil about him. Jangil advises Sunho to “go after the big guys instead.” Sunho disagrees, but later at a karaoke bar advises Jangil that he wasn’t able to get anything on PJ so he’s holding fire (“for now”). Meanwhile, PJ tells Sec. Cha to set up a blind date between Sunho and his stepdaughter, Yoonjoo. “Hide her identity.”
At this same bar, Jangil drunk-dials Jiwon but says nothing. She sees it’s him and seems rather put off. Later, Jiwon learns from her sister that Jangil visited her mother in the hospital and paid their bill. Jiwon, plainly embarrassed, has to field questions about her "boyfriend" Jangil.
David Kim continues to harass Jiwon, even treating her like a kisaeng, asking her to go out with his clients. When she firmly refuses this, he tells her she has a rotten attitude and that might affect how she does at his interview. When she does go to her interview, he’s even more rude and sexist; she objects. Then he tells her she’s kind of old for an unmarried woman. [Ooooh. Smooth.] He persists in being rude and quite cruel, especially when she tells him he reminds her of someone she “knows.” He later tells his assistant that he thinks he came home too late for Jiwon. [Or, you know, too much like a douchebag.]
Sunwoo’s assistant Sec. Koon prepares a final petition to the police, naming Mr Lee and PJ as suspects in Mr Kim’s death and naming Jangil for attempted murder of Sunwoo. Sunwoo decides only to name PJ as they “need to get them one at a time.” Koon objects; Sunwoo insists. Taejoo is supposed to bring Mr Kim’s letter, but when he comes he pretends he lost it (which David does not believe) and will testify instead. (Before he visited Sunwoo, Taejoo visited Eunhye’s grave at the cemetery, saw and overheard PJ scold her for loving Taejoo and tell her he hated her. PJ looked like he’d cry soon.) Sunwoo takes the report to the police station, and while he’s there he ignores a call from Jangil, who's desperately trying to reach him after his press conference.
Jangil’s father invites Soomi to his birthday party—Dad likes her. She’s the only guest at their uncomfortable dinner, and then Mr Lee makes an excuse to leave them alone together. Jangil tells her that Mr Choi visited him at his office and warned him off Soomi--plainly, the guy’s not good enough to be seen talking with the great Jangil. He is cruel to Soomi about her love for him, so she reminds him that he’ll have cause to regret treating her like this. She leaves; he tosses his wine glass against the wall.
Sunwoo calls Jangil, and they drink at Sunwoo’s office. Sunwoo plays with Jangil’s mind, then asks him to keep his teenage promise of looking into Mr Kim’s murder. Jangil “can’t help”—not his jurisdiction. But he’ll refer it to a friend. As he walks home, Jangil begins shivering and by the time he gets home, he’s bed-sick.
Turns out Yoonjoo went to school in London with Sunwoo and she asks to introduce him to PJ, who’s interested in mining and dying to meet David Kim. They meet for dinner; PJ is shocked to see who it is. When David asks if PJ recognizes him, PJ puts on a “remembering you” play and asks how things have been. Sunwoo says, “I was lucky and found a good friend who helped me.”
David gives PJ investment advice. PJ thanks him, then asks if he knows of Moon Taejoo, who he heard is famous in David’s field. David says, “I think he’s out of it now.” PJ likes Sunwoo’s new name, and Yoonjoo mentions it is after David & Goliath. Who is your Goliath, David Kim? “Everything that gets in my way.” PJ laughs at this. Going home, Yoonjoo tells PJ that anything David says is reliable.
As for Soomi, she’s been a busy girl. She receives flowers and figures they’re from Sunwoo. This disturbs her, but her father is excited they might get to see him at the gallery. After the horrible dinner with Jangil, Soomi drags out a very old box and cuts it open. Then she sits in a chair, drinks wine and gazes at photos tacked to the wall. Photos of Jangil hitting Sunwoo in the head with a piece of driftwood.
Jangil has told his Dad not to tell PJ about Sunwoo’s eyes—“We’ll handle it ourselves.” But, after meeting David Kim, PJ calls Jangil at his office and they meet. PJ needles Jangil about blinding Sunwoo in the first place. He wants to make a plan of attack, but Jangil is defiant, doesn’t want to cooperate. PJ laughs at him. Jangil states that it’s PJ’s problem and his dad was only a patsy, and PJ laughs again.
“I guess I made a mistake, then. Oh, one more thing. What if Mr Kim was alive when your father took him to the mountain to hang him?”

Note on prosecutor Sunho/Joonho/Yoonsuk – He’s called both Sunho and Joonho (this is the translation I got) in this episode, but when I looked for the actor (Kang Jisub), I found he was listed as having the character name Yoonsuk.
Also, I think Sec Koon, in his younger incarnation, was the fellow who always spoke English to Taejoo’s Korean. Odd that he stopped doing it once they changed actors.
When Sunwoo was in the library in London as a student, he had a conversation with a Korean girl. I wonder if that was Yoonjoo. He said her name, but I didn’t pay attention, thinking it was just a ruse to explain that he was in London without having the actor speak English.
I loved the look on Jiwon’s face when she realized Jangil was drunk-dialing her. Priceless.
Srlsly. Now they’re saying the PJ/Jangil/SW meeting before the coma took place 11 years before. For pity’s sake. 1997 to 2012 is…15 years! Doofus writers.
And “Lee Jangil, I was there that day,” is rather a banal line for Soomi in those circumstances. Of course she was there, we know she was there from the bridge painting. Some better line? I could think of dozens, and so should the writers have. Such as, she doesn't say anything but simply silently gazes at the wall, as the camera slowly pans over her face to the incriminating photos she's kept hidden this whole time...
At the salon, when Mrs PJ and Yoonjoo are getting massages together, I just about did a spit-take when Yoonjoo got David Kim’s call and, very excited, let her towel fall. "I told you to get a boob job" says Mom. THAT’s nice writing. I love Mrs PJ, I wish we saw her more often.
