MOE Ep9 (this is kind of long but it's a turning-point episode)
Moon Taejoo got Mr. Kim’s letter but was unable to come before Kim died. Mr. Kim, Taejoo and President Jin were members of “Changwon.” TJ tells Sunwoo, you have 24 hours to get it together, then you’re coming with me. “Or?” Or Mr Kim’s death will be a suicide forever.
Soomi is miserable over Jangil. Her father tries to get yet another ransom but ends with a broken arm, then evades detection by PJ’s Sec. Cha, but sends two more letters. First, to Sunwoo telling him what he saw. Second, to PJ, saying you’ll be very sorry for what you did and relating that he saw Mr. Kim kicking at the end of a rope “that night.” Excellent novella, by the way. From this, PJ concludes Kim was still alive when Lee hung him, and files that info away for later. Much, much later.
Sunwoo is assigned to massage “someone he served before.” Thinking it’s PJ, he calls Geumjool and tells him where he’s going. Only it’s Jiwon, desperate--she loves him. He is oddly, gently cruel to get rid of her, breaking her heart. But later, he writes her a letter using a real pen, asking her to wait for him, and leaves it lying. When Taejoo arrives, he asks Taejoo to “check for loose papers.” TJ reads the letter, puts it back down and says, “there’s nothing here.” Geumjool runs up as they leave, demands to know Sunwoo’s destination and is asked to tell no one what happened here.
Jiwon goes to Sunwoo’s apartment because of something she heard. She cleans it up, reminiscing about the poem he read to her in the dark. Finally, she finds his love letter asking her to wait, and she also picks up Mr. Choi’s letter from the mailbox. When she gets a librarian to read out the book that Sunwoo read the poem from, she finds out it’s a massage textbook and that he made up the poem as he read to her. Jangil finds her crying and scolds her. “You’re so selfish, before you can be a great prosecutor you’ll need to get a heart,” she says. She drops Sunwoo’s stuff and Jangil sees Choi’s letter but it has no meaning to him. Jiwon later packs up Sunwoo’s belongings in a pretty box, puts his letter to her and Choi’s letter (unopened) on top, and closes it up.
Soomi learns Braille {man, this girl really is a genius} so she can read her painting and Sunwoo’s report. Shocked, she realizes he remembered everything. She visits Jangil, forgives him for the incident between them and tells him she’s going to Chicago to major in “Photorealistic Oil Painting” {ridic, LOL}, and when she returns he’d better watch out for her tracks.
Jangil tries to find Sunwoo, then walks the city, remembering what a great friend Sunwoo was and their good times together. Over his shoulder, a plane in the distance where Taejoo tells Sunwoo to forget his past, he’s about to start a new life “as a new person.”
13 Years later—2012 Jangil is a special prosecutor and gaining in importance. He’s happy as a clam because he’s helping the downtrodden. His father lives with him and acts as housekeeper. Dad also has been contacted by PJ, who now wants some favors. Jangil doesn’t want to ruin his life by getting involved with such an article, but Dad is oblivious to that.
Somewhere, a metronome beats as a fine specimen of manhood does chin-ups in a finely appointed apartment. It’s Sunwoo…looking all fine. Yep. All fine.
Soomi returns to Korea for the first time in 13 years, now a high-fashion photographer and painter. She meets her father and thanks him for staying out of trouble. (Dad, working in a theater, has dreamed of Sunwoo flying first class on a plane, reading Braille and drinking wine.) Soomi also meets a gallery assistant and is rude and arrogant to the poor girl. When Mrs PJ (“Mrs Ma”) arrives, praising Soomi’s genius, Soomi agrees. Yes, I’m a genius. She wants to send out her own invitations to her gallery opening, but in the end, she apparently only sends out one.
Jiwon is a hotel executive, in charge of “VIP management.” She’s assigned a US-Korean named David Kim, who’s going to be using their hotel for secret meetings and requires an organizer and facilitator. They personally chose Jiwon from a bunch of resumes.
Mr. Kim apparently works in a garden shop. He gets a phone call from Sunwoo and he and Jangil go to meet him in a restaurant.
Sunwoo alone in a restaurant, with dark glasses, at a table. Jangil and Dad stealthily move toward Sunwoo, greet him. Sunwoo is apparently still blind and claims he’s been a drifter, living off of massages and teaching people Braille. Jangil looks him up and down, his clothes, his watch, his tan. You look good says Jangil. You look like you haven’t been sleeping says Sunwoo. Good guesser, says dad. They have an uncomfortable meeting, and Sunwoo ends up spilling tea all over Jangil and then insists on cleaning it up, making things worse until Jangil speaks sharply to him. Jangil wants to know, why’d you call us? Sunwoo thought they’d be worried about him, and when they say they were, he asks why they never looked for him. “I was busy. I have a meeting, I have to go, dad will stay.” Sunwoo says he has to go also. As Dad and Jangil leave, Jangil seems suspicious and keeps staring at Sunwoo through the window. Sunwoo, a stern look on his face, sits and waits.
Comments:
I have to say the eye-crossing thing Sunwoo is doing is completely weirding me out. I’ve never seen Uhm Taewoong do that ever before, how the heck? LOL.
So I was interested to hear, when Jangil asked his dad, “How’d he get your number?” Dad answered that Sunwoo said he called PJ's house and was “friends with PJ’s son.” Hmm. Hmmmm.
Now, the question. Is Sunwoo still blind or just using his old skills for secrecy? Could go either way. Did he spill the tea on Jangil on purpose? Why on earth would he? Any guesses as to the identity of "David Kim"? One guess, I'll bet.
