First, a full replay of the action to date. Jangil tries to get Jiwon to be with him, but only makes a fool of himself and infuriates her. He goads Sunwoo into trying to date Jiwon, but Sunwoo wants something better for her. Then Jangil finds out Sunwoo is going to the police, but he still doesn’t know why, as Sunwoo lies to him about it.
Sunwoo learns Jiwon strained her voice recording a book he wanted and buys her a scarf (she follows him on this journey). He wins some orchestra tickets, and they agree to meet at the hall. When she’s late (but not injured) due to a car accident, they have an emotional moment. They start spending time together. Very sweet.
Soomi and a jealous schoolmate get into a cat-match. Soomi later begs her father to go to Seoul and start anew so she can have a clean slate when she attends school in the States (for which she expects to get a scholarship). At first he is unwilling but eventually agrees.
Sunwoo moves out (not before overhearing Mr. Lee talking to Pres. Jin on the phone about the murder). Jangil tries to poison Sunwoo’s mind against Jiwon, but Sunwoo knows he's going to get hurt eventually. Just for now, he wants to be with her. Jangil seems to understand this.
Geumjool leaves Sunwoo at his new digs, where he falls asleep in the dark. Jiwon arrives with supplies and braille books, along with a print version of the Hemingway. The lightbulb burns out, so Sunwoo reads her a book in braille instead. They don't know the title-- the braille on the cover is worn (but it sounds like the Barrett/Browning letters to me). She marks that book with little heart stickers. Very romantic.
Outside, Taejoo instructs his English-speaking lackey to teach Sunwoo “all you know”--French, English, fencing, kendo--and asks if this is a good place for the kid to live. (How do they expect to get Sunwoo to accept this help?)
Sunwoo trains to be a masseur. (Side note—this is one of the few jobs traditionally open to blind Koreans; there was upheaval recently when it was proposed that sighted persons should also be so licensed.) It is hard work, and Jiwon tells him she doesn't want him to be a massage therapist. He says he has to try it to see if he likes it. Then she asks about his accident, but he wants to tell her “later.”
Meanwhile, Mr. Choi’s blackmailing letter (demanding $30,000) strikes fear into Lee’s heart and he brings it to PJ. PJ first accuses Lee of blackmailing him, then accuses Sunwoo. Lee investigates and clears Sunwoo, so PJ gives him the money and orders him to follow the pickup man. However, Choi is too smart and instead follows Lee to learn that the money came from PJ. So he writes another letter offering to keep PJ’s secret for $100,000. PJ is certain Sunwoo is involved and wants Lee to knock him off. Lee is too wracked with fear and guilt. “At least rough him up, if it's not him we'll be able to tell from the next letter.” Lee can't do it, he says. "You want me to just kill him?" returns PJ.
Sunwoo gets his first massage assignment at a hotel. He rings the doorbell. The door slowly opens to reveal PJ. "Hello sir, I'm a trainee," says Sunwoo.
COMMENTS: Okay, I was thinking it was going to be Moon Taejoo. PJ is really, really scary. However, we got some new insight into his character with the speech about “a warm place for people to think of when they're cold.” Poor boy makes good. Too bad he’s a psycho.
At the orchestra hall, I loved how, when Sunwoo hugs Jiwon, she hugs him back but only with one hand--she is a virtuous girl. But then after he says, "I don't care if I miss all the shows," she hugs him on both sides. Who could resist?
Mr. Choi is pretty smart—plastic gloves for letter blackmail! Smarter than Mr. Lee was. But what’s with accosting Lee in the restaurant and goading him like that? Choi is pretty psychotic too I think.
So Geum Jool means “gold rope”---he must wear a necklace. I never noticed.
Really, on a library book, heart stickers? Really? Register Bo as outraged.
