Here's a Korean cooking blog I hadn't seen before. Lot of photos. This entry is more descriptive of foods than directions for preparing them. It may be more useful in planning a trip to Korea and finding a variety of cuisines. The foods look delicious. Aha, there are recipes too, if you click on "recipes" at the top of the page. D'oh. I hope some of the products are available around here, because they're made of buckwheat not wheat. (I hope they keep all wheat out of them, because I can't eat it.) www.zenkimchi.com/FoodJournal/korean-food-101/pyeongchang-buckwheat-cuisine/

Have you seen Maangchi? Buckwheat is not actually a kind of wheat? Aren't I surprised.

Just wondering, I have been eating a lot of mochi on my frozen yogurt this summer, anyone know if I can buy it in a Korean/Asian store? We love it!

Bird11, I've seen mochi at H Mart in Morton Grove (at intersection of Oakton at Waukegan Ave.). It may be in one or more of three sections of the store. Left of the back right-hand corner, in refrigerated cases [that back up to the produce section] (before you get to the fresh-fish section), or in the frozen-food section, or sometimes at the front of the store to the right of the cashiers. ("Right" and "left" assumes you're turning a corner as you go through the store.)
I wish I could draw a map here. Entering the store, you're at its west wall, and going south. Go south past the restaurant counters, turn east/left before the refrigerated cases of Korean deli kimchi, seaweed salad, fresh pancakes, soup, and [things I don't know] and look left to see more refrigerated cases.
Second place is in freezers in center of the store. Third possibility is at east end of the store, at right/south of cashiers, with fresh stuff [bakery/acorn jelly?/cookies?? it varies].
I'm getting hungry now...

I've gotten some good mochi in the refrigerated section of H-mart. Surprisingly fresh, light and sweet. I always look for the ones with the most natural sounding ingredients.

My favorite Korean food, after barbequed beef, is pancakes made with chickpea flour. The recipe calls for soaking dried chickpeas, adding water, eggs, pork, onions, green beans, ginger, garlic, and a dipping sauce of soy sauce, ginger, garlic? My shortcut is just the bean flour, water, and eggs. Still good, with salt and maybe with sesame seeds. Have you had bibimbap? Served in a hot (pottery) pot, so the egg will cook. I think it's yummy. Kimchi sometimes has creatures in it..... sometimes I like it, sometimes I can't face it. I never want to find squid in it..... Too bad I can't find the recipe for the pancakes online. There are recipes for socca and farinata, though, chickpea pancakes from France and Italy. It's bedtime but this is making me hungry. www.kalynskitchen.com/2009/07/recipe-for-socca-garbanzo-or-chickpea.htmlwww.thewannabechef.net/2012/05/15/chickpea-flour-pancakes/

DYC, why do I keep thinking you are of Korean descent? Maybe it's the initials. So many DJG, GKS, DJY, AOW etc. running about here...
I never had bibimbap in the pot, I've only had it (a) takeout from my local Corea Cafe, served in styro (but delish), or (b) in a regular big bowl at the ajumma station at H-Mart. Sounds like there's a place there I need to check out for pot-based goods. LOL...

I probably have this mortal fear of going into a Korean Food Emporium and trying to pronounce Bibimbap in my heavy London accent, than seeing all these people staring at me wondering "what the **** is he talking about ?".
Its like coming here and someone says "hey want to go play football in the park " and i go "sure" than when we get there im like "hey you cant use your hands thats cheating ".
Yes im sick of the intial's rather the DYC a moment of haste years ago (that's what they all say )but no Korean descent "totally euortrash " .at least i did not use QSD or DJG . Koreans have it good compared to us Limey's no silly jokes about ARE YOU BEING SERVED TEA AND CUCUMBER SARNIES AT 3 WARM BEER PALE SKIN BAD TEETH BAD FOOD SOCCER HOOLIGANS BUT SOMEHOW WE ARE ALL GAY BECAUSE WE SPEAK FUNNY . BAD WEATHER BENNY HILL . That's my list of stereo types actually i get at least two from the above list every week . And my personal favorite " do you go to English Pubs ?there is a nice one down the road full of Brits " Of course my standard reply "Oh really and ha ha why would i come 8000 miles ,relocate to hang out in pubs full of ex pats when i could have just stayed where i was ..moron !" .
Ok that's my rant . funny though my father was a pub manager and used to hang out with the "Are You Being Served " cast as the BBC studio was a few blocks away . And Benny Hill that lady killer ..not actually he was a misogynist with a penchant for the lads the younger the better ,he was always being robbed by the young gentlemen he bought home .

Oh, dear, TMI (Benny Hill lol...) I feel your pain on the Brit jokes--I was on the opposite end of it when I visited Britain lo these many years ago. ;D I made the mistake of saying I was from Chicago. (A) Oh! Gangs! (but they meant the Italian kind) (B) By golly! Dew Yeu Laieke maie Amurricun aksent? (weird vibes of Allo Allo lol...) (C) Do you know [name here]? No? They LIVE in MILWAUKEE!!!! Etc. But YOU KNOW ALL ABOUT THAT. I finally decided they were just trying to be friendly, so I was able to chill, but I only had to put up with it for two weeks not permanently. It is my fondest wish in life to hang out with a pub manager who hung out with BBC TV stars. You lucky stiff you. LOL...

Not so lucky he had drinking and gambling problems as well as anger issues .
Once again though i think just like here it is down to where you go ,for example i grew up on Portobello Road and we always had loads of American Tourists and aside from New Yorkers (because New York is the pinnacle of culture and everywhere else is a dump blah blah ) whom we disliked ,all Americans did really well there ,people were really interested in finding out about the U.S. No silly questions there was a level of respect ,but if you went to some area like Liverpool full of scousers and bin dipping slum dwellers (Ok we are kidding its a North vs South thing UK Style ...in fact there is a Chelsea Vs Liverpool Facebook page that is nothing short of hilarious ..the insults are really witty and barbed even viscous but its all in jest ) i could see that ..even other parts of London you would get that .
I always get people trying to copy my accent and make fun of it and it really does not bother me i am actually used to it at this point .
Its funny about the cultural difference though ..a long time ago these two American journalists came over to write about the punk scene and tagged along with myself and than fellow band members in hope we could give them a pathway to the ones at the top ,(which we did and illusions were shattered but not documented ), We were being interviewed for to be honest lack of better prospects and were asked a whole slew of stereotyped questions to which i replied in honest answers which did not fit the stereotypes or what they had been led to believe , as such it was never used . Funny thing i did stay friends with one of them (the other passed ) ,the interviews were never used until recently when i found pics and snippets on a Facebook Page for her book which is a photo essay on that era with forwards and endorsements from Rolling Stone peeps ect . Now what was considered deviating from the program than is now considered brutal honesty .
People raise their eye brows now when they find out i watch Korean (And Japanese ) Films and Dramas ,It is viewed as eccentric and they fail to understand why i would watch say any Korean Drama over CSI . At the same token there are so many people that love Korean and Japanese food but would never watch a Korean or Japanese Film or Drama .
Hmm think im trying to make some kind of point but have not figured out what yet ?.
