MOE Ep.3
Instead of ambushing the rival gang member in a dark alley, Sunwoo starts a fight with the entire gang, is beaten nearly senseless and is left for dead. While his "body" is being transported, he makes a dramatic escape onto the top of a commuter train and hides out until he learns the two gangsters have since joined forces (no longer interested in Sunwoo). He also learns where his father went that day--PJ's house construction site--and goes to ask an embarrassed Mr. Lee for help locating possible witnesses.
Mr. Choi drafts out a letter of blackmail to Mr. Lee. However, Soomi finds it after an uncomfortable experience with Jangil in Seoul (where he behaves disgracefully, leaving her stranded). She instructs her dad not to do anything or tell anyone about it--even Sunwoo. (Dad is not happy about her obsession with Jangil, evidenced by many drawings of him in her bedroom.)
PJ's wife is a trophy wife, who has a daughter from a previous marriage. This daughter is a fine singer and teacher, but wants to go into business instead of music, to her mother's chagrin.
In Seoul, Jangil tells his father he'll get a scholarship so Mr. Lee won't have to toady to PJ, but dad says shut up and take PJ's money. Later, at school as an assignment, Jiwon describes her meeting with a mystery boy (Sunwoo). Jangil then relates his first view of Jiwon singing Moon River, and uses the opportunity to meet her. She won't go out with him because she has to work 3 jobs, but he manages to make her smile at school (this, after he reads something apparently disturbing in the papers--no translation).
Sunwoo gets a phone call from Taejoo, who is stunned to learn of Kim's death and apparently then hangs up without explaining himself.
The man PJ had investigated was dead Mr. Kim. Learning Sunwoo was adopted, he asks Mr Lee about him. Lee poo-poohs the boy and downplays his relationship with Jangil.
Jangil returns from school for a visit. He and Sunwoo have a really nice, buddy evening. Sunwoo says he'll petition to reopen the investigation into his father's death. Jangil offers the help of his dear friend Pres. Jin as a powerful backer, buys Sunwoo a suit and takes him to see PJ. Sunwoo shows the photo of Kim, Taejoo and PJ, and PJ prevaricates about knowing them. PJ also claims he was on a business trip on murder day. (In PJ's inner dialogue, he sees Taejoo in Sunwoo's profile.) PJ makes vague noises to Jangil about keeping his nose clean, but Jangil is oblivious and promises Sunwoo he'll go to the police with him next day. That night, Jangil returns to the estate to overhear PJ reaming out Lee and gloating over how Jangil will look when he realizes his father got involved in a murder to get him into school.
Jangil tries to talk Sunwoo out of opening the investigation, even going so far as to confess to the murder himself, but Sunwoo refuses. When they meet in a solitary seaside area, Jangil beats his friend over the head with some driftwood, drags him (apparently unconscious) to the shore and throws him over the rocky cliff to the sea below. Sunwoo sinks into the water, head bleeding, betrayed by his best friend, his hands clutching in apparently psychic pain.
Comments: I was rather shocked that PJ was making no effort whatsoever to locate his son, but then I thought he was, but then of course he thinks Sunwoo is Taejoo's son so he probably wants him miserable anyway. I know this sounds rather pallid, but what a jerk.
I wonder if that nice doughy little boy who brought Sunwoo the news about the gangsters and the taxi driver will figure in later episodes? If so, I'll add him to the character list at that time.
When Sunwoo and Jangil were having the wonderful dinner together, it was rather ominous, eh? Especially when Jangil started talking about the girl he liked. I knew things between them couldn't end well after THAT dinner. LOL...
