Ep.38 –:
San says he’s adopted by Hyo-jang but the blood son of Sado, infuriating Yeong-jo further. The Norons don’t know what to think; Princess sees a sad life ahead under Queen’s thumb; and Lady Hye is especially upset over the whole thing and predicts disaster.
The Queen decides to seize her last chance to take power and instructs her brother to keep the scribe from letting Yeong-jo know what he said at the meeting; later, she stirs up fears in Y-J’s mind about a Prince Yunsan-style progrom.
Hong approaches San, tells him Yeong-jo may have dementia, and launches an investigation. To infiltrate the royal pharmacy, Uncle is pressed into service (as only eunuchs can go and he is unknown there). He nearly bungles it, but gets the king’s prescriptions, confirming the diagnosis.
Y-J calls a meeting and issues a decree that he’ll ask San once again if Sado is his father, and if he says he is, he’ll strip him of heirship. Y-J refuses even to meet with Hong and Sir Chae.
San remembers his father’s painting, which Yeong-jo had no reaction to 14 years before. Eunuch Nam suggests there may be a secret, and that they get Song to investigate. She can’t find any symbolism, but notices the paper is unusually thick. She shows Mr. Tak and Mr. Lee, and Mr. Tak says, “They may have added more paper.” So she looks closer and realizes all the characters in the painting are pointing toward a turtle in the corner. She can peel back from the turtle, and there are documents beneath the painting. She can’t get to Dae-su or San, as they are under house arrest. Lady Hye bullies her way in to see San. She wants him to reject Sado but knows he won’t.
Song goes to Yeong-jo’s palace and tells the Eunuch she’s got a painting Y-J asked for. Y-J lets her in because he thinks he just forgot. She confesses her lie and delivers the letter from Sado. Y-J hears the history of the delivery, reads the letter and is very much affected.
Y-J relives the terrible day he executed his son. Then he goes to visit Sado’s gravesite to cry and apologize. He arrives home just as the queen is scolding the eunuch for letting him escape the jurisdiction, and he tells her to come back another time. He sends for San and orders everyone out of hearing range, tells San about his dementia and says he knows that San knows. He scolds San for covering for him, says that San is the son of Sado, who is Yeong-jo’s son, and heir to the throne. He’ll abdicate in San’s favor immediately.

I've seen the boxing-up of Sado a few times now in different dramas, and I have to say this particular one was the most affecting.
