Ep.37 – Sat 10/1 probably should revise but don't have time right now)
After the queen tells him to leave, San chews her out and asks to see Yeong-jo, who is too dispirited to see anyone and says come back later. Queen smirks, smarts off at San and leaves.
Lady Hye and her father are upset to hear about Lord Kim’s return, the Queen’s visit to the king and that San was not admitted. Insp Hong thinks it’s a conspiracy by San’s enemies and also that Yeong-jo intended to do it all along, but San rejects this theory and has faith the king will be able to explain.
The king remembers the queen telling him his diagnosis and that she swore to protect him and to find a cure for his dementia. When he asks her directly if she got him to bring her brother back, she swears she had nothing to do with it. Then she thoroughly twists the old guy around her finger and earnestly tries to talk him out of revealing it to anyone.
Song receives a visit from Lady Kim, bringing gifts from Hyeoui. The princess plans to help San and Song get together, in spite of Lady Kim’s desire that Song had “just died” and the promise San gave to Lady Hye.
Yeong-jo questions his physician and learns his true diagnosis. Then he calls in San and tells him he can’t explain now, but if he can’t resolve “the problem” soon, he’ll tell all. San wants Hong to investigate something. Yeong-jo orders a young official scribe to follow him, never take his eyes off him for one month and record every single thing he does and says. (No bathroom breaks?) Y-J’s chief eunuch spies outside the office door and sends a report to the queen, who tells her brother to find out about the scribe so they can control him. He tells her that the Norons are now flocking around, so Princess and Jeong are being pushed aside. He wants to kill these two, but she tells him it’ll be a punishment worse than death to be on the outs, as she was. Princess (against Jeong’s advice) calls a meeting to salvage her life, and the queen orders everyone to go even though they don’t want to. Of course, when Princess arrives, the queen is presiding, and kicks her out again. She orders Jeong to stay there. All the ministers, excepting Jeong and Sir Choi, cravenly beg the queen’s forgiveness. The queen visits Princess, who has been imprisoned in a shed. Princess is pretty much forced (by circumstance) to beg on her knees, but is left on the shed anyway.
Song’s first assignment when she returns to Dowahseo is to take a map to the king with Mr. Tak. The king recognizes her and compliments her. He sends the others away and asks Song to check his memory of the map; he’ll recite the place names and she’ll correct him. As she heads home that evening, she runs into San, who inquires after her health and sends her on her way.
San learns the doctor is attending the king, but not following normal procedures (the royal secretary not present). Yeong-jo is having acupuncture and taking tonics twice a day in an attempt to stop the march of the disease, as is recitation by memory.
Hong gets Dae-su plus 2 to investigate and they learn about the queen’s doctor and the scribe. Hong reports to San, who figures the king is sick but why should he hide it? In the meantime, Yeong-jo is reciting his day to his embarrassed scribe, who tells him he didn’t forget anything but clearly is lying (because he is a sucking wound). That night, Y-J has a nightmare about his discovery of Sado’s treason against him.
Insp Hong is secretly followed, but he notices and makes a run for it. When he is caught, Lord Kim arrives and has his men beat him out of revenge. But Hong threatens to “send poison” to Lord Kim, so the man kicks and beats Hong nearly to death. Next day, Dae-su finds Hong staggering in the streets and takes him home, attending to his wounds and making threats against Lord Kim, but Hong tells him to butt out. D-Sa reports that as Hong suspected, Lord Kim has a man going in and out of the king’s scribe’s house. Also, tells him about the map reading. Hong finally figures out that Y-J may be going senile.
In the meantime, there is a cabinet meeting and Yeong-jo arrives in a fury, demanding to know why he wasn’t informed. He’s completely forgotten putting San in charge of these meetings. Unfortunately, Sir Chae had been discussing repairing Sado’s dilapidated gravesite, so Y-J chews San out thinking that’s why he pulled this stunt. Y-J demands that San say his father is Y-J’s elder, deceased son Hyo-jang (who had posthumously “adopted” San after Sado’s death) instead of Sado. The ministers are all atwitter.
