Ep. 28:
Hong keeps San in the dark about the kidnapping, and swears the three guards to secrecy, because San cannot afford to be involved in a scandal like this. The queen's attempt to get Yeong-jo to act backfires, as he attacks her for having made enemies in the palace, causing her to believe her feckless brother, who probably just took off, had been kidnapped. She, however, is suspicious that Y-J already knew and she is a nervous wreck. Jeong, Sir Choi and Princess also are nervous; nobody can tell what's going on.
Hong's plan is to force them into making mistakes. He also sends out Dae-su plus two to gather irrefutable evidence while they wait for Lord Kim to rage until he's worn out; then they'll confront him with this evidence.
Lady Hye, who has been asked by Hong to investigate Princess's quarters, goes to visit her sister in law. Lady Hye plays some mind games with Princess, then reports to Hong that she's definitely acting oddly. Lady Hye later reveals the situation to her father and nerve-wracked uncle.
When Hong learns one of the parties he is seeking has been murdered and the other (arsenal chief) is still missing, he thinks he's lost his chance to force Lord Kim to come clean. Then he is summoned by San, who knows what he's up to and reminds him he's been authorized by the king to do anything he wants. So using the King's authority, he mobilizes the Capital Army to openly follow every single minister, including Jeong and Choi, making them think Kim has told the king everything. They obviously cannot visit the queen, so she's left stewing and uninformed. She goes to visit Yeong-jo and learns he is refusing access to all members of the royal family. Y-J, having decided to trust Hong's advice, is denying access to everyone for 10 days. Then Hong lets Jeong know that he's behind everything--the kidnapping and the soldiers--and implies Lord Kim revealed all.
Hyeoui worries about San, who reveals to Sir Chae that he's staying in the background because he's worried about what further disturbing information he may learn about his familial enemies.
The king's portrait has been commissioned, and the artists tussle over the honor like schoolboys. Sponsor Lee has qualms about using the gisaeng to get the commission, but Uncle talks him into entertaining the men who will award it at the gisaeng house.
While the queen stews and seems to be coming unhinged, Jeong and Choi plot throwing her and her brother to the wolves, in order to save their own skins. Dae-su, having been sent to plant a letter at Jeong's house, notices a mysterious lady visit Jeong. It is the queen, come to reassert her power and demand a report. When she leaves, Dae-su (still in the dark) follows her back to the palace, where he receives the shock of his life when she's unveiled. He reports to Hong, who is scared silly by the revelation and reports the shocking news to San.
