I almost couldn't believe it when I read it...and then I almost choked on the water I was sipping when I realized she really said it. Grandma Sohn really and truly called Young-joon, her one and only grandchild, a scumbag. In front of her driver, no less. In fact, she was blathering on about some very sensitive material in front of a servant, who shouldn't be hearing any of it.
Actually, despite the dramatic tension of the terrible, heart-jerking sadness of her meeting w/ Ja-young and the emotion of what Grandma was feeling, as well as Ja-young stumbling on by herself on the street afterwards in blinding tears, there was something slightly humorous about the scene of Grandma in the car on the way home, ranting to herself against the thoughtlessness of Young-joon, who brought all this heartache on all of them by his ingratitude. It seemed pretty obvious to me also she feels nagging guilt for the pain she's causing Ja-young...but instead of admitting she's being unreasonably hard-headed, she chooses to transfer blame to Young-joon.
Was anyone else surprised when they saw the "scumbag" remark?
All in all, I thought it was an awesome ep....just packed full of terrific stuff, running the gamut from high drama, tear-jerking pathos, hysterically funny comedy, strong artistic direction and almost unbearable dramatic tension....all of it blended together in just the right way, achieving a perfect balance.
So many great scenes and little touches throughout...I hardly know where to begin. The scene in the men's clothing shop w/ Tae-young trying on the suit (and yes, Mi-ryung, he does look fab in it! Yum!) and Mi-ryung accusing her mother of being as mean as the wicked stepmother in Snow White and Cinderella, Tae-young grinning to himself in the dressing room.
Most rip-roaring hilarious of all was the early morning scene in Woon-kyu's apartment the day after Sang-min returned...Ki-hoon walking in on Sang-min in the bathroom shaving and screaming out startled at the sight of him...then acting all obsequious when he finds out who he is, bowing and sucking up to him while the guy's face is full of shaving cream...then turning over his sausage for Sang-min's breakfast when he's been so stingy and miserly w/ every scrap of food of his before this. Woon-kyu's reaction, too, was extremely funny. Ki-hoon is so delusional thinking this is his big break into the world of corporate executive wheeling and dealing. The rate things are going for Sang-min, he may well be running into Ki-hoon tomorrow at the unemployment office.
So many other great scenes....Woon-kyu sadly tossing bread crumbs to his "grandson" turtle; Grandma Wey trying to keep a poker face for Na-young as she carries Ja-young's terrible secret; the heartache of Ja-young's scenes juxtaposed to Young-joon's blissfully ignorant cheerfulness and optimism as he signs a lease for a house for Ja-young and leaves her voice mail that he's decided to take over all decisions for her affairs.
A powerful dramatic effect used, IMO, were two sequential scenes w/o dialogue, first showing Sang-min at his desk in his darkened office, then an aerial shot of him walking totally alone across the sweeping, opulent marble floor of the building's lobby, exiting alone into the darkness. Some of you wiill probably think I'm overstating it shamelessly, but it reminded me of camera/artistic direction techniques used in the famous film "Citizen Kane"...sorry if you think I'm getting carried away, but I really thnk it was that good.
Sang-min lying on a mat on the floor next to his father, forced to listen to his father's depression-reinforcing ramblings...my how the mighty have fallen! And I think it's only the tip of the iceburg for him...
The ep's end was agonizing, too...I had a lump in my throat so big I could hardly swallow. Poor Ja-young! And poor Young-joon when he finds out what's really going on! Oh, I can hardly stand it!
What about the rest of you? Do you think I'm overstating how great this ep. is?
