Door 60 - I'm in upstate NY, around Syracuse. On KBS, they were showing "Landscape in My Heart" in the afternoon. I'm also recording "Cooking Up Romance" but can't seem to quite get into that one. Is anyone else watching that?

Hey guys.
Finally back on the sight. Not sure where everyone is on the drama. We're at the episode where Subin saves Hosae from the falling mock wall at the furniture factory.
Of course they're rushed to the hospital. Subin is unconsious, but wakes up fine. Goes out to the hospital lobby where Hosae is and is talking with the building director who says that Subin saved his life (cough) bulls**t (cough). Hosae's mom comes in and hears that thanks to Subin Hosae's not brown bread. Subin hears this and its not the outcome that she's looking for so she goes back to the nurse as asks her to lie to the group saying that she was severely hurt. Got tired and DVRed the rest. Not sure if you guys already know that episode, but I'm in the agreement that its the same drama formula recycled time and time again.
Hate to say it, but that sort of mentality with marriage is still prevalent in some areas of Korea's social ideology. I remember I wrote something about this before, but when I working in Korea as an architect and part-time english teacher you can see transparently through a few mom's and daughters. I never had trouble with dating before, but in Korea women practically threw themselves at me. My father is a physician so when that word got out, I started to get random calls from some mothers of my students asking me to come over for lunch or dinner. Yeah, freakin' psycho but more awkward. Pretty sure the info was leaked at the part-time english school, since guys in a situation like mine, brings more students. You get the drift. I've had even more "stronger" suggestions from students but kept my head on straight. I've seen and met alot of guys who took the easy ticket and got burned...permanently! Oh, the stories are a bit too much for this thread.
The funny thing about it, is that I actually married an French adoptee. As you all know from the dramas and what not, that marrying an orphan is an absolute shame for any korean family. Literally, on the public record there is a big, black "X" on the family tree. That's why you see Soyoung's mother all pissed that she can't transfer Yoon Hee's registration under her name so she can hide the fact that she's an illegitimate child. Hell, if you date or marry a woman who's had a previous relationship like that you're basically ostracized from the family. My wife's father actually gave her up for adoption at the age of 7 because he wanted to get remarried. The move was sanctioned by ALL of his family.
Thankfully, everyone on my side has been absolutely fantastic about it and welcomed her with open arms. J'adore my french family that I'm so grateful the way things turned out. Ironically, we found her birth father who ended up living in the same state as my parents. His new wife doesn't want anything to do with her even though she just wants to meet her father again because she thinks we're after his money. What a laugh. The new wife met her birth father when he was visiting korea to go "wife shopping" at one of those group meeting events so that korean women could find rich koreans with US passports. She "married up" if you know what I mean. I swear my life would make a great drama as well.
I don't mean to typify all Korean families out there, but there is a reason why this train of thought is so identifiable in the Korean media. I don't mean to lay my whole life on the line, but I think alot of these experiences really shape my perception of korean society and dramas that I think alot of it is total BS. I got really peeved when I was watching "Likeable or not", but in the end everything rights itself. Lesson learned. Just wondering if any of you have had similar experiences or find the clash between eastern and western cultures a bit much.
Sorry to go off on a tangent, but seems like a few people were wondering why the characters were making some head scratching decisions. Apologizes again!

WOW what episode are you on lfcfanatic9? I haven't gotten to that part yet. I have a feeling that Subin will be more and more evil as the episodes go on. I hope Hosae dumps her and says to her in her face that he hates her. Saebyeok is too good for him. I feel bad for Subin's dad. He's such a nice man, but married a evil woman, and thus produced a evil child. I feel kinda bad for Hosae too. His mom is evil and also produced an evil daughter. What's with evil women in Korean dramas?? Oh and the grandma is evil too. She was evil in A Happy Woman (weekend drama) I wonder if these actresses mainly play evil characters? Would be interesting to find out.

lfcfanatic9, none of what you posted really surprises me. What's with evil women in Korean dramas?? Oh and the grandma is evil too. She was evil in A Happy Woman (weekend drama) I wonder if these actresses mainly play evil characters? Would be interesting to find out. Someone has to be the bad guy (or girl). I've noticed that some actors tend to play bad guys.

Yeah, Knov1. When I first started to get into Korean culture, I was a little shellshocked. Now, eh. The last time I went to Korea, my wife and I went to the orphanage where she stayed before she was adopted.
Talk about a humbling experience. Of course, the facilities are much better than 20 years ago. Still not up to par. I don't believe the Korean government allocates that much funds or if any. Most are private owned. Holt is the biggest one if I'm correct. Anyway, we spent about $150 on food, clothes, and other necessities. We really stretched our money by going to the markets for the clothes. Ended up buying about 15 sets of clothing for the kids during winter. We asked the agency for a list of things they need. In the end, we couldn't make up our minds so I said, "F**k it. Let's buy everything!" The kids were fantastic and it was definately one of the most fulfilling thing I've ever done. We're going to make plans to go back the next time.
mickstjohngirl, not really sure what episode. Last night's episode, Hosae goes to Saebyeuk's place and she tells him to get out. I think Subin was there for some reason and she apologizes for something. The wife is watching it now on DVR, but I'm going to read my mail. I have this strange feeling that when the story goes on, Saebyeuk is going to be related to Subin or Taeyoung's mother. Subin's father did have a mistress before he was caught by his wife. Maybe that was a little foreshadowing. Plus, it would resolve the issue of Saebyeuk coming from a good family and compensating for her being an orphan.
Is this about where everyone else is at? I'll write up something about the episode later.

I totally forgot about that! What if Saebyeok IS Subin's half sister?? That would be very interesting. Does Subin ever apologize to Saebyeok for treating her so badly? I went on the KBS drama website and it showed a preview for tonight's episode in Korea. Subin is still mean to Saebyeok! Maybe we'll find out later who Saebyoek's parents are. What a shock it would be if Subin's dad is Saebyeok's dad!

lfcfanatic: Very astute of you that Subin and Saebyeok are probably half sisters due to the affair of Subin's father. I definately agree that that will probably happen. Also, why would a black "X' be put on the family registry of an orphan? I can understand the "X" on an illegitimate child, but an orphan? Could you give me some insight about that, lfcfanatic?

Hey door60.
Been a while since "Likeable or Not.
I came to that conclusion after the lessons learned from "High as the sky, wide as the earth and Likeable or Not." The pattern is pretty much the same. To validate the probable relationship of Hosae and Saebyeok, they have to hold some sort of respectable family stock to compare with her main rival, Subin. The playing field would be equal and the connection of Taeyoung's mother would grow much more knowing that she's family. Plus, the main family antagonist would pull a complete 180 and the audience would enjoy the her humility after the way she's treated Saebyeok. I'm not saying this will happen, but just following the pattern. Plus it's always away of bringing the issues in public, but watering them down to acceptability with highly dubious circumstances. IE: Coffee Prince.
As for the "X", it's for orphans only not for the illegitimate children. My bad, but usually an illegitimate children become orphans sadly. It's all about bloodlines. Incredible, isn't it? As if the child never existed or more of a "techincality." Almost like the next Blade movie is going to be about Koreans. Purity of the blood and family is given way too much priority in today's world in my view.
That's one reason why some koreans are against koreans dating and marrying outside of the nationality. If I remember correctly, marrying someone of Chinese decent is acceptable, but someone of Japanese is out of the question. But more and more Korean farmers are dating and marrying women from southeast asia because dating is so difficult in the countryside.

Anna I think it more likely that Sae Byuk(SB) is Young Sook(YS)'s daughter;the one that was supposed to have been lost at sea.Name:Dae Young(spelling?)That's why SB wears socks to sleep just like YS. I seem to remember one episode mentioning he had an affair only 5 years ago so I really doubt they could be related that way. They could, however,be first cousins. YAMD is about Sae Byuk against 5 witches...LOL Soo Bin is such a load of GARBAGE that she has naturally picked up some nicknames....Soo Dust Bin....Sewerage Soo Bin...and,of course,...Soo Bintch.. ;D

I thought there are 3. Taeyoung, Taepung and Nayoung now deceased. The 5 witches you are talking about.. Are they Subin, Subin's mom, Hosae's sister, Hosae's mom and Grandma?
Those are the 5 witches I can think of.
Soo Dust Bin. lol

Anna, you are spot on regarding the witches. He He He What I notice is that they are relentlessly on SB's case, one after the other....sometimes two at a time.

What are the witches you are talking about? ;D LOL It's just me collectively name-calling the 5 women who deliberately make SB's life miserable and difficult.
Oh ok I think I remember now....Could Saybyeok be her daughter?? That would be it great. Subin would be going off on her own cousin too! What a shock it would be for Subin and Subin's mom! Yah!If it turns out to be true,it'll make my day,it would!! ..I really think it's more than likely.Oh yah...strange coincidence regarding initials...Soo Bin n Sae Byuk are both SB;Yeon Shil n Young Sook are both YS....daughters n mothers?Coincidence or deliberate by the writers? Soo Bin's Mom(Yeon Shil) is a real pain and it wouldn't surprise me in the least that she gets divorced from Dae Gu in the end!

It's a shame because adoption isn't even an option for most Korean couples so the only hope for these kids is being adopted by a foreigner. Then, when a foreigner does want to adopt them, Koreans act like they're stealing these kids. I know the Korean government launched a PR campaign using celebrities to make adoptions more attractive to Koreans but it doesn't seem to be working. I'm sad to hear you guys don't like Gong Hyun Joo (Soo Bin). I love her (she's the girl in my avatar). The actress, not the character.
