Choongnyeong's two eunuchs scream for help as the prince loses consciousness. Muby surveys his work and then leaves the scene...with Jeon Ilji right behind him.
A baby is crying! Princess Shim’s baby has been born. We see her child presented to her for the first time.
Choongnyeong is brought home on a stretcher and taken inside, with the projectile still protruding from his chest. The stretcher is placed on the ground, and the princess gingerly gets up and goes to him. She kneels by his side, opens up his robe and carefully pulls out the projectile. It doesn't appear to have penetrated the prince's body deeply at all (there's no large amount of bleeding) and in fact seems to have been lodged in something else beneath the robe. The prince regains consciousness and immediately asks, "How is the baby?"
Choongnyeong, much more alert, is presented with his child. (The baby we see is at least two weeks old; gotta love TV.) "Don't cause our mother worries like your father always does," he says, and gives the baby the boat he whittled. "I wish...if I could put you on this toy boat, I'd like to take you away from the royal house, wherever it may take us." And he cries.
"A vest?" Yun Hwe, Yi Su and Shim On are examining the vest that Choongnyeong was wearing under his robe. It's an arrow-proof vest that princess Shim made for him! She knew that silk could be nearly impenetrable when layered a certain way. It saved his life. Then the prince enters and tells them he's going to ignore the incident, so just go home. They argue with him to no avail, but then Shim says, "Who's to say it won't happen again if we overlook this?"
Shim On informs the king. He adds that the projectile didn't penetrate too deeply, but the impact may have hurt his chest bones. And he tells the king that Choongnyeong doesn't want an investigation. They try to figure out his reason.
The king goes to see the crown prince, but he's not home. "He's out of the palace against my orders at this late hour?"
We find Yangnyeong. He's at the weapons bureau, being shown the new mini-musket by the Mins. He fires it (he's a good shot) and is impressed; the Mins tell him it will be "the key to restoring your damaged reputation." But off to the side, Gang Sangin is observing this.
Gang, with a squadron of men, orders the search of a building that apparently is at Min Muhyul's home. They find projectiles that match the one shot at Choongnyeong.
Gang shows the seized projectiles to the king.
Inside the ancestral shrine: The king has gone there...Flashback to the Second Princes' Rebellion scene shown in Ep1...Looking at a picture presumably of his father, King Taejo, Taejong thinks, "Did I make you that angry? Is that why you're putting me through the same pain?" Then Choongnyeong enters: "Did you wish to see me?" "I heard you became a father. Are you happy?" "Fear of not being a good father precedes joy." Silence, and then, "The weapon that hurt you is in your brother's possession. I am ordering a tribunal." But Choongnyeong tries to hold him back: "Shouldn't we look further into the truth first? We can't jump to conclusions just because the weapon was in his possession." Then he asks his father to be allowed to conduct the investigation. The king agrees, and then says, "Take Sangin with you."
Yi Su and Yun Hwe are discussing the attempt with Choongnyeong. Yi asks, "How can you say they (the Mins) may not be the culprits?" Yun responds, "Because it's too obvious"; clever politicians wouldn’t be so clumsy. The prince nods. Then he tells them to start the investigation at the bureau of weapons. "If we can find the man who made this weapon, we can find the man behind it."
The crown prince and princess arrive at the king's quarters for morning greetings. "Turn him away," Taejong tells his eunuchs. He says he's ill. They leave, and outside the princess tells her husband with unusual insistence, "Stay in the east palace and stop going into the city." And then: "He might be refusing to see us because he already knows." (!? Knows what?)
Back inside, Noh Huibong asks the king "Are you angry at him for trying to kill prince Choongnyeong? Or is it pity you feel?" Pity, that is, for Yangnyeong's predicament. The king glares and Noh withers, but we can see that the words register.
The next morning: Choongnyeong goes out and is met by Gang and a whole bunch of guardsmen. From a distance, Foreman Jeon and Muby watch the scene, and their eyes widen as they see the prince not only alive but up and about. They report back to Ok Hwan. They can't understand it; Muby tells Ok, "I swear to you I shot him in the heart last night!" They're stumped, but Jeon says what matters now is that they need to get to Jang Chilsang before anybody else does so they can protect themselves. Choongnyeong is alive and "There's no sign of an investigation of the Min clan." So Jang will be next, they correctly reason.
Yun Hwe is at the weapons bureau, showing one of the seized projectiles to Choi Haesan. To Yun's amazement, Choi says he's never seen such a thing before. He surmises that a small musket fired it but knows nothing about such a weapon or who might have made it. "Oh, boy, this is not going well at all," Yun moans.
Jang Youngsil is at the marketplace, supplying one of the vendors with metalcraft items he's made. Granny Cowsears and Yi Sun show up, and Yi admires a hairpin that Jang has made. She tries it on; the old woman remarks with a smile, "We call this casting pearls before swine." Such a thing is only for ladies of the court, she says, but Yi would buy it for her mother if she could. Jang watches her and thinks back to the fireworks in Ep6, with Daion wishing that her mother could see them. He gives the pin to the girl and tells the vendor to deduct it from his invoice. And he leaves.
Just then: "Make way for the royal prince! Make way!" Choongnyeong comes through the street, carried on his palanquin and surrounded by dozens of guards. It's an impressive-looking entourage. To the side, Yangnyeong and Gu Jongsu watch this; it's a little tough for the prince to see his brother with such an impressive security detail. Then, who should walk up next to the two but Auri. She's critical of Choongnyeong; tells Yangnyeong that anyone who would "let a little praise and attention go to his head" isn't "kingly material." That's not praise and attention, Yangnyeong comments; it's public sentiment. But she counters, "Back where I come from, we say heaven chooses the king, and not public sentiment." And she walks away. He laughs a bit and glances in her direction, but not showing any particular interest. (Obviously, she was sucking up to him.)
Gangmu Field, on the hunting ceremony grounds: The princes are shooting arrows. Choongnyeong is having trouble drawing the bow because of his injured chest. Finally he sucks it up, shoots one and bullseyes. Hyoryeong smiles, and so does Kyoungnyeong. Ministers congratulate him, but Choongnyeong says, "I owe it to my coach for my improvement. Right, coach?" and gestures at Kyoungnyeong. The ministers ask him how he got such an impressive "assistant." Bad choice of words; it immediately wipes the smile off Kyoungnyeong's face. Choongnyeong tries to put a stop to things--"That's not what I meant"--but the ministers make things worse by telling Kyoungnyeong, "Serve him faithfully. The world has great expectations for prince Choongnyeong!" Kyoungnyeong bristles.
Ministers are in a room. Min Muhyul confronts Shim On: "How do you influence the king to put a security staff as large as the king's on your son-in-law?" I know why, Shim fires back; Don't you? Finish your thought, Muhyul challenges, but Shim has to leave to go see the king.
Another day at the chuksukhee grounds. This time, Yangnyeong is actually playing! After the match, he invites his teammates out for a drink--his treat. He's even learned their names and calls them his "subordinates."
"Min Muhyul is disgruntled by the protection?" The king is told of the confrontation by Jo Malseng, who witnessed it. "Why shouldn't he have protection?" Jo advises that maybe having Gang there is too much, but Taejong replies, "He's the one man I can trust with my son's life."
Evening at the archery grounds. Kyoungnyeong is shooting alone; Choongnyeong arrives with the entourage and apologizes for making him wait (apparently this was a scheduled practice session). But Kyoungnyeong is disgusted. "I know about the crown prince," he tells his half-brother; he's always in the city or at the chuksukhee field, and not at the palace any more; "Meanwhile you have the security of a king?" This distresses Choongnyeong: "Would you believe me if I told you I didn't want this?" But Kyoungnyeong feels angry and betrayed (and undoubtedly jealous as all heck for what he perceives to be Choongnyeong's increased status): "You just get through the hunting ceremony and you're practically the next king. Isn't what why you chose me (to be your coach)? A king doesn't fight his own battles," he says; a king gets pawns and moves them around. He puts down his bow and turns to leave, and Choongnyeong asks him (with a very, very poor choice of words), "Does this mean I've lost my pawn?" Seething, Kyoungnyeong walks away.
Back home, Choongnyeong is told by Yun Hwe and Yi Su that there are no leads yet. He gets frustrated. It's only been one day, they remind him. But the prince is practically shouting. "Do whatever it takes to get this over with! I hate dragging around all those bodyguards, and I hate being seen as a covetous politician. I'm sick of having to be constantly on guard, and I'm thinking so much I feel like my head might burst. I'm tired of everything, the investigation, the hunting ceremony, and I want this to be over!" and he storms out. Clearly the strain is wearing heavily on him.
Choongnyeong goes to the weapons bureau. Choi Haesan wryly comments, "We've never had this many visitors in one day!" But the prince is in no mood for small talk; he wants Choi to show him his staff records. "Has anyone been acting suspiciously lately?", he asks. Even doing something as simple as leaving early. At first Choi says no, then he remembers. There's one man, he says, But he's my most trusted subordinate. Choongnyeong asks, What's his area of expertise? Compound metal. Choi goes over to Jang Chilsang's work area and rifles through the stuff there. He turns up a projectile and a matching tip just like what Yun Hwe showed him earlier. Bingo. The prince orders, "Alert the royal inspectors office and release a composite sketch at once!"
The next morning: a wanted poster of Jang Chilsang is posted EVERYWHERE.
Ok Hwan, holding a copy of the poster, is thinking hard. "How do we use this to our advantage?"
Outside, Foreman Jeon finds Jang walking around, trying to hide his face. He tells him, "Master has an assignment for you." And escorts him to Ok's compound.
Choi rushes in and tells Choongnyeong that Jang has been found. They hurry out...
...and find Jang dead on the floor of a room, blood on the floor. On his body, they discover a note issued by the Min clan.
Taejong looks at the note, which Gang has brought to him. "Arrest Min Muhwe and Min Muhyul immediately!"
We see the two Mins get arrested and taken from their home.
"My brothers tried to kill prince Choongnyeong?" The queen has been informed by Escort Han. She can't believe it. "The king has already used my bothers as sacrificial lambs once, and now he wants to do it again?" Han, though, tells her that she heard the crown prince is behind it. This staggers the queen.
Hyobin is laughing. "I won't even have to bother looking for the nursemaid now. (See Ep21 for explanation.) I'm sure the queen won't remain a queen much longer with four of her brothers charged with high treason."
The crown prince is examining a mini-musket in his possession. "I tried to kill my brother?" He can't believe what's being said.
Ministers are earnestly discussing the situation. They know that Yangnyeong has one of the muskets, and the order is given to recover it.
Choongnyeong is outside. Yangnyeong shows up, holding the musket. It's loaded with a projectile and Yangnyeong points it at his brother. "Light it up!" he orders his eunuch, who won't do it. Hwang steps in front of the gun, begging him to stop. Yangnyeong orders, "Step aside!" But Hwang tells him, "I believe you. No matter what anyone else might believe, I believe you are innocent. You are not a contemptible man who would hurt his own brother to protect his authority. You must fight this situation with poise and confidence." Yangnyeong drops the weapon to the ground. (It never seemed like he was going to hurt his brother; he only wanted to scare the heck out of him.) But he glares at Choongnyeong and tells him, "Don't talk to me about brothers and family again. You lost your chance, just like I did." And he leaves.
Going into a courtyard with Hwang, Yangnyeong tells him, "I will not forget this, minister Hwang. Even if I get arrested for this; even if I lose my crown, I will not forget that you trusted me. Thank you."
That evening, outside Choongnyeong's home: His two eunuchs are standing around with Yi Su and Yun Hwe. The girl Yi Sun brings some medicine to offer to him for fighting infection. Just then Choongnyeong emerges. "Get ready," he announces; "We're going to the bureau of weaponry." And then, Choi rushes into the yard. He's examined the mini-musket closely and tells the prince, "I don't think this is Jang Chilsang's work." The metalcraft is extremely sophisticated, he says, and "the bureau of weaponry did not develop this technology." He shows them the metalwork and explains that Jang doesn't have the skill for it. Then the girl, who's been listening to all this and looking at the disassembled gun, pulls out her hairpin--the one from the marketplace--and puts it next to a piece of the gun. The craftsmanship is too similar to be a coincidence.
Jang Youngsil is working in a shack, alone. Choi enters with a squad; they search the shack and find a container full of the mini-musket projectiles. Jang is arrested and brought before Choongnyeong. The "enemy" mark that was branded into his chest (by Han Younglo in Ep10) is visible until Jang pulls up his collar. The prince demands, "Are you the one who made this musket?" Jang sneers and answers, "That's why I'm here, isn't it?" He tells them that he doesn't know who he made it for. "All did was sell my talent for the right price!" Choongnyeong informs him that the gun was used to shoot a prince and that such a weapon could eve be used against the king. He asks, "Are you saying money is more important than a man's life?" "To me it is. Money is more important to me than my life." Then the prince grabs Jang's arm, reaches for a hatchet, and says, "Joseon does not need these hands. I will cut them off and be rid of them!" And with an absolutely maniacal grimace, he raises the hatchet and yells....
A baby is crying! Princess Shim’s baby has been born. We see her child presented to her for the first time.
Choongnyeong is brought home on a stretcher and taken inside, with the projectile still protruding from his chest.
