It went by very quickly, but did anybody else get a good look at the sequence in Ep. 41 (Monday’s) when Li was on the platform and the soldier got hit with the flying spear? Not the first guy with the dagger, but the second guy? What a GREAT stunt! I had to tape the rerun and slo-mo it because it was all I could think about for the rest of the episode.
That was no special effect—it was a real spear and flew with a big arc like it had some serious bulk to it. It came from behind the camera and flew at least ten feet; the guy took it square in the chest and flew backwards off the platform. Obviously the guy had padding to absorb it, and I’m sure the tip was blunted some. And they must have had some kind of launch device to give it a reliable trajectory. But still, for a guy to jump in there in the path of a dangerous object and get thwacked square in the gut and then take a dive all in one move—just a beautiful piece of execution (no pun intended).
And the guy playing Li, credit to him for kneeling there and letting the thing whiz right by his head. He was looking away until it passed—how can you blame him—but it was him up there and not a double. And the editing was terrific; the whole sequence was seamless. Frankly, considering who threw the spear (won’t risk a spoiler here just yet), they really should have worked it into the plot more, because it’s a shame that something so well-done just passed by so quickly without more notice.
It’s too bad we’ll probably never know the stunt guy’s name because he deserves credit for it. The battle scenes in these shows are always put together so well, it’s one of the best things about them.
