Yoiks! Here's another one I missed! Sorry! BoUmm.....i LOOVE VIB's art (and want to use it for a web page for the Admiral Yi series; can i, VIB?)...but as i visited the KBS site www.kbs.co.kr/drama/leesoonshin/, i noticed that they spelled it Lee Soon-Shin, vs. VIB's Yi Sun Shin. i think KBS's follows the new "official" spelling/Romanization www.kccla.org/html/renglish.html, which i know our translators don't always follow (that's why i started web pages on the shows). i was wondering if there's any word on how it will look (and uh, VIB, would you be able to update your previous work?)

JP,
i don't think the romanization really matters
the translation of his war diaries and memorials to court spell his name yi sun sin
i have also seen yi soon shin yi sun shin lee soon shin
but everyone will know who you are talking about
if there is any confusion
you can always write it in korean ;D
and yes, please feel free to use my art

oh one more thing
in korean, we don't pronounce his name Lee we say Yee which is more like Yi so i always spell his last name starting with a Y

I think it's not so much a matter of Romanizing than of Anglicizing the name, as occurred with European immigrants to America as well as Asians. So 'Yi' became 'Lee', just as 'Bahk' became 'Park'. These then became the accepted Romanized spellings.
Thanks for the link, JP! I did a Web search recently for "Korean Romanization", but didn't see that one. It seems there are quite strong differences of opinion on which scheme is the best. All the Learning Korean books and Korean-English dictionaries I have use that scheme with the 'breve', and as the site says, that isn't available on the computer.
I would just say spell it À̼ø½É, except that he himself would have written it in Chinese.
