So i know the expectation was that this show would be exciting and action packed. after all the trailor made it seem as if every episode would be centered around the war. but i think the writers did a great job of creating this fictional friendship between the young future admiral and Won Kyoon and Yu Song Ryong. I was very touched to see how much Kyoon took care of Soon Shin and how much Song Ryong protected him.
the latter half of the episode where they play hooky was absolutely darling. between peeping the washing geishas, stealing a chicken and then eating it at night in front of an open fire, i thought the kids did such a good job of acting
and we finally learn why YSS life was additionally difficult and why his father does not care about his education
i was so sad to to see that their family history was so awful. no wonder his dad is so cynical. though the man who played Soon Shin's grandfather had only a small part, he did a very moving performance. one could say that his editorial before he was forced to drink the poison is a recurring theme in korean politics, even unto today (only there's no king now).
i wonder what the admiral would think of that?

okay the more i watch that particular scene the more i laugh
when they take song ryong and show him the bathing geishas and his eyes practically popped out his head
that was funny enough
boys will be boys i guess regardless of what land they;re born in
but when Soon Shin's MOM catches them being peeping toms, i thought that was too funny. how embarrassing is that?
and what does she do?
she buys them lunch
i wish my mom were like that...

death by public poisoning was a common method of capital punishment for those of nobility
i think my grandmother called it sah yahk (yahk meaning medicine)
i have always wondered what exactly the concoction was made of (so if anyone knows the name of the plant...)

i liked this episode as well, especially the way the boys bonded and stood by one another.
the scene watching the girls bathe was so funny, eyes popping, mouths open.....as vib said, boys will be boys in any land, and apparently in any time period too.
i also liked the scene where soon shin finally jumps from the cliff. the clenched fist, well we see that again....but i think this is where he finds real courage and never loses it again. after all courage or bravery isn't a lack of fear, but acting in spite of it (paraphrasing here).
his father, i learn and understand him more with each episode, or i should say with each repeat watching of the episodes. what a hard life the family had, and why that word 'traitor' rips at the heart so.......

i felt like i was watching a disney movie. I want to see guys beating the living sh*t out of eachother, not a bunch of kids swimming in a pond. And the ending was really bad. I think the writers are confusing Yi Soon Shin with Leonardo Dicaprio. Anyway now that these two episodes are done, i think we can get on with the show.

I liked episode 6 because it showed where he got his determination from. The way his grandfather had to kill himself in front of his family was just sad. All in all, this was better than episode 6. I still hated the lil rascal parts of the show though. And ID, its not over yet. We still got to go through his friendship with cho soon (I think that's his name. The guy father dies because of salt), His relationship with his future wife, and more. Yep, this section of the drama is surely not for the american males. Guess we'll have to wait a bit more.

sigh...again...
so just a reminder...again
the title of the show is "The Immortal Yi Soon Shin"
not "The Rip-Roaring Action Times of the Samurai vs. Chosun Sailors"
if that is what you are looking for, best tune out until episode 20 airs in your neighborhood...
no single man's life is a continuous battle epic (except maybe for george patton - another of my heros)

Now I know I had mentioned this before: I thought YSS's dad and AOW's Captain Park resembled each other. But now, upon closer inspection, I ask: Are they the same actor?

ID Woe betides you and the burdensome existance that is your life! I had not the faintest idea of the sheer magnitude of the hardships that encompass your daily life. I bemoan your fate and extend my deepest condolences. If there is anything that myself or my fellow fans can do to ease your tribulation, you have but to ask. perhaps we could contribute funds to purchase for you a robot butler? you deserve no less, after all of your heroic efforts. However, I fear that there is little I can do to remedy the situation of the children in the pond. Perhaps if you sent yet another correspondance to wMBC punctuated with your trademark colorful language (don't forget to mention Jeju Island)...if it is not too taxing for you to extricate yourself from your sofa... (VIB gets down on all fours and bows deeply to ID and hands him a chain with which to attach the remote to his hand)
