I was checking out ch 48 today, while waiting for MPC to start, and at about 5:30 PM there was a Korean drama WITH SUBTITLES!
But . . . the subtitles were in Chinese, and it was dubbed in Chinese as well. It is an SBS drama, which we never see on WOCH. I thought I saw Hong Soo-hyun (Hee-soo on MPC) and Um Jung-hwa from 'Wife', but the reception wasn't good and the voices were different, so I can't be sure.

Okay, so I guess if we want to see the latest dramas from Korea we'll have to tune into a Chinese station instead of a Korean station. Does that make sense to KBC?

Ok, here's some information. The show is 'Stairway to Heaven'. No, there isnt any Led Zep music. I was compleatly wrong about the actresses. The one I thought was in 'Wife' is actually Choi Ji-woo, Yu-jin from WLS. What can I say, the picture was fuzzy, her hair is different, and she's speaking with someone else's voice. Korean Wiz has a page for this show, and there's a thread about it on the So-cal board. It's in Chinese out in California, too.

Well, isn't that interesting? Ch. 28 can't get SBS dramas but Ch. 48 can.

Yesterday as I was channel surfing during the day (as I was so lazy I took the day of work) I tuned into channel 48 and I did see that they had some Asian dramas, but they weren't subtitled some I couldn't tell if they were Chinese or Korean. I did see SBS, on one of the dramas. So who knows, maybe they'll start airing some of the dramas with english subtitles and we'll get to see the newer Korean dramas.

So, to confirm, WFBT-CA (over the air channel 48) carries Korean dramas in their Chinese programming slots?
What about WWME-CA (over the air channel 23) in their Chinese programming slots? Any dramas there?

I couldn't tell if they were Chinese or Korean. Easy. Look at their mouths as they say the words. If they match up perfectly, it's Chinese. If not, it's Korean.

Stairway to Heaven is a great K-drama. Many have compared it to Winter Sonata. I don't know if I would go *that* far, but it's "up there." I saw a lot of similarities between the two dramas (no, I'm not going into detail). Both leads are great, but I have to say, BYJ just edges ahead. I bought mine from YesAsia and just finished watching the final episode yesterday. Melissa

Well, a lot of times, Chinese dramas look and act mostly the same as Korean ones. So look at the credits then. What language are they in? Korean should look somewhat like this: www.census.gov/dmd/www/imgpromotion/KOREAN.GIFChinese is much more complicated. But don't trust the title! Most historical dramas in Korea have the title written in Chinese, since Koreans didn't use Korean until about 1000 ad.

Well, a lot of times, Chinese dramas look and act mostly the same as Korean ones... Really, Jangune? Most of the Chinese dramas I've seen did not look ANYTHING like a Korean drama. They looked filmed, for one thing, where the Korean ones looked taped (except Bodyguard). Also, the Chinese acting seemed broader, more theatrical and stagey, to me. Also, the storylines seemed more...bizarre, out of this world and in a different one. Of course, there's always the possibility that what I took for Chinese dramas actually were Japanese! Wouldn't that be funny. Bo

The mystery of Chinese historical dramas. I don't know about you all but something about a king shooting fireballs while flying in the sky just don't scream realism. (I'll admit I'm stereotyping Chinese Historical dramas but I did see a ruler cast a spell on somebody while channel surfing with the blue aura and everything. I guess people got their own ways to tell history)

Really, Jangune? Most of the Chinese dramas I've seen did not look ANYTHING like a Korean drama. Well, I was watching the Chinese channel one time, and they had this Chinese drama on (no subtitles or anything). It was almost EXACTLY like the Korean dramas I've seen. Typical evil gangsters that capture the damsel in distress while holding an entire group of people hostage. The hero stands in the background, shouting for them to release her. Girly Damsel is looking scared. Girly Damsel eventually softens the gangster's hearts (we didn't see THAT one coming ).

But, of course, there are lots of other types of Chinese dramas. There are - dramas based on comic strips, like 풀하우스 (Full House),
- dramas with country folk picking on young city brides, like 낭랑18세 (Little Bride/Sweet 18/18 Year Old Bride)
- and tons of miscellaneous romance dramas.
