I don't see any thread for this one yet. Have you seen it? It was on this morning (Friday) in the MPC slot--I assume it shows on Thursdays, too. Anyway, it's a documentary following a young man named Gallus (from England), who married a Korean girl who was in school in England. Her father became terminally ill, so she wanted to move back to Korea, so he went, too. When people speak Korean, it's subtitled in English, and when they speak English, it's subtitled in Korean. The wife is pregnant and miserable, but she doesn't want to take even prescribed meds, so she's being pretty mean to this poor guy. He hates to fight, so he just goes back to their apartment (downstairs from the family) and cries. Fortunately, the family (most importantly, the girl's brother) likes Gallus, so they are helping him cope. It's about the sweetest thing I've ever seen. The older brother took Gallus out for drinks and explained drinking conventions like holding your glass lower for an older person, or who pours. It really reminds me of Who's My Love (a drama about an extended family living in a four-flat together). You should check it out. Bo

That's funny, Bo, I just saw it last night for the first time, I guess because it's on in the MPC slot at night, too. I liked it! I thought it was strange, though, how simplistic the narration is, like a nature film. "Gallus cries because his wife is angry at him . . . . Now see how Gallus and his brother-in-law bond over a glass of soju in the bar . . . His brother-in-law has taught him about the Korean drinking culture." LOL
What kind of name is Gallus? At least it's made of two simple syllables, easy for Korean speakers to say; what if his name were Thaddeus or something?
Gallus looks really young, like about 21, despite his size, which makes him seem older at first.

Yeah, he reminds me of my brother, one of those big, sweet, gallumphing guys who look like they could break crockery just by being in a room (they look clumsy) and who wouldn't hurt a fly. The narration also reminds me of those shows on PBS-20 about peasant culture in various countries--China, Burma, Peru--they do have an air of nature-show about them, don't they. I hope I can see more of this.

I got a kick out of the narration too. I think Gallus is actually 28 though. His wife is 29, so that's why his BIL was saying that he was probably crying because he's younger and also because it was his way of letting out his frustration. I would have actually liked to have seen him cry. That camera crew looks like they are filming really CLOSE to their FACES. I'd be annoyed.

Isn't this a good way for us to learn about Korean culture from the point of view of someone who's like "us"? OK, I know technically the POV is not that of Gallus, but we're seeing the stuff that affects him as a foreigner. It's kinda neat.

This has actually been on for the past couple of weeks during the MPC timeslot (I usually at least turn it on to check and make sure they're actually not airing MPC).
I'm not exactly sure what the documentary purpose is, other than to show a young couple, one of whom is not Korean, adjusting to married/pregnant/Korean life.
In the previous episodes, I didn't catch this, but I think it's really funny that Misha (How G says it; I don't remember her real name) speaks in a Cockney-ish accent when she speaks English. Heh.

I also watched gallus from ENGLAND and enjoyed it,it was only five episodes long so it ended friday night. the pov was to show how cultural differences can be overcome through understanding and love. his wife's name was mi-gyung and her english accent I thought quite funny lol even though her english was very good,I had listen hard to understand her.

Can someone remind those who did NOT watch MPC to let us know the time of the show...? Thanks! It's at 6 on Thu and Fri, but toranaga says that it was over as of the 17th. Hopefully they'll put another fun (subtitled) show in there if they don't put MPC back on, so you could check it out this Thurs and see.

My satellite provider cut MPC to 3 shows this week and they showed Gallus last night. I think it was the first show (I missed the first bit) and it's interesting and amusing at the same time. His wife seems to wear the pants in the family. I cannot imagine my Korean DH letting me tell him what to do! LOL Plus, he certainly wasn't that way when I was preggo with his son (reading books to my "bump")! Yes, the doctor let us know it was a boy because he knew as an American I didn't care which sex the baby was - but I wasn't supposed to tell anyone ).
His wife seems to be a handful. OH! When they said Gallus couldn't understand how his MIL could come in without knocking....I could relate! LOL My MIL would come in our room all the time without knocking (we lived with them), that was one thing that kind of bugged me. It was especially funny since I had a call this morning from my BIL (in Korea). He made me talk my MIL, SIL, and a niece ...thankfully not the entire family, but even then I was reaching at straws as to what to say. My MIL was impressed with my Korean and laughed with delight. But believe me, it was pathetically inadequate. My BIL was impressed and when I told him I learned from watching Korean dramas (he speaks some English), he said it was a great way to learn. (I was forced to communicate because DH was at work.
