hey guys
just another suggestion if you want to see a really great korean movie,
Based on a true story, the title, Silmido (pronounced Shil mee doh) refers to an island off the coast of south korea where 31 death row convicts are offered a chance at life in exchange for agreeing to train for a top secret mission. Their task - to infiltrate the north and slit the throat of Kim Il Sung, dictator of north korea. Though they succeed in surviving the brutal training on the island, the mission is suddenly canceled in light of a new foreign policy towards north korea. Unaware, the men find out later that they government, after promising them pardon, salary and honorable status, was disavowing any knowledge of their existence. Enraged, the unit - unit 684 - put their combat training to use and escape the island with one goal - to storm the Blue house (equivalent of the white house) and speak with president Bahk Jung-Hee.
thoughone would think that there would be little room for sympathy towards convicted criminals and terrorists, you become very drawn into the lives of the 31 men. The characters are beautifully written and extremely complex. And at the end what is most striking is that you wonder who were the greater criminals, the government officials who were willing to kill 31 men in order to cover up their former plans, or the men who suffered together and built the deepest of bonds in the worst of circumstances.
the movie does a wonderful job of elaborating on what sort of effect such harsh and dehumanizing effects would have on a person's psyche, but it also shows that despite it all, a person can still retain a sense of dignity and honor.
watch this movie - you will not be disappointed.
available with subtitles
oh - and the archer from MuSa is in it as the drill captain and he is the ULTIMATE bad@ss.

If it's anywhere near as interesting as what you have described, I'm sure it's great.
Thanks for the tip.

That policy of yours has been open to debate for a few months now hasn't it? I feel as though I've witnessed your questioning of it on more than one occasion.

Here's the official link www.silmido2003.co.kr/It's pretty good, like VIB said. Terribly sad though (and bloody at times).

Wow VIB. Hearing you talk like that makes me wish I were a Korean hunk ...with cool sunglasses to boot. Alas, I remain an average american male. (Married too, so you know I was only joking. Please don't take offense the way so many others have in my lifetime. ) Anyway, you sold me on both films VIB. I'm hoping to see both of them during the holidays. At least Musa, which seems to be the easiest one to find. Thanks!

Thanks, VIB. I wonder if they sell/rent it at regular video stores, or maybe Korean video stores around Chicago? But 10 bucks is cheaper though so I think I'll just go w/your suggestion.
