I thought that scene between the original's Moma's boy and Grandma was very touching. I'd be lying if I said I didn't have a lump in my throat when I saw it.
I guess he's come to the awful realization that his mom is mortal. If he paints her portrait it's one way of being inmortalized. He better hurry up and do it!

Yes, that made me sad. I think it's not only about her being mortal, but also he's finally begun to realize what a disappointment he must be and he can see how depressed she is because of that and other things. Unfortunately, we have not been shown any reason for him to think that way. Bad writing, I guess!
The grandma, though, is a bit of a mystery. Why is she so depressed? Maybe it's not because of anything in particular, just age and sadness and life in general? I can see how her family is not the happiest, but she does have a pretty nice (though spoiled) granddaughter and even though her son and DIL are not that great to her, they do ask her to go out to dinner and stuff. But she always refuses. Just to do a little armchair psychology, I think she has a lot of internalized anger. Maybe she'll do a late-life turnaround like the grandma in One Million Roses, and we'll see her get out and go dancing once in a while.

Hi, guys..i'm an avid mpc watcher too....
Here's my take.....do you remember the scene where spoileddaddygirl's mom was sitting with her staff eating and discussing giving the old people at the rest home giving baths and comfort?
Well, the daughter in law seems not to get that she should spend a bit more time trying to make her own mother in law happy by spending time with her, instead of always rushing around trying to be a dogooder...while poor grandma is sitting at home lonely.
I think her marriage stinks because of the totally sick relationship the father has with his daughter. He treats her more like a lover than a daughter...sic-o! The wife, who is working hard and making all the money has put herself above her mil. I think in this culture, age is revered, and the granny feels she has lost face for having such a loser son.
lol....my two cents! Barb
