(& i'm sure i'm not alone on this- ;D) mbc doesn't apparently know how to make a buck outside of korea. don't mean to sound as if i'm slamming mbc it's just that we r a possible demographic & when it comes to making money off of a show we're important. i'm one of those people, if i like something i'm not afraid to buy it. i just wish mbc (& sometimes kbs & sbs)weren't afraid to sell it to me.

I, too, would be willing to pay the $340 if the J-G set of DVD's would come out with English subtitles. Someone had suggested a while back to e-mail Tom at YesAsia.com to advise him that there were diehard fans awaiting such a release. It was thought that Tom was interested in knowing how many viewers would be willing to buy the subtitled set if he were to undertake such a daunting project. (We realize that this is no small task.) That was a few weeks ago, and I have not yet received a reply. I entered my correspondence to him in the YesAsia.com order site (in the message box area), so I don't know if he has actually received my message yet. ---Anyone else have this experience? I don't want to give up that there is someone/a company who is willing to distribute the DVD set WITH English subtitles. There are MANY English-speaking fans out there who adore this series, but have never posted anything on this fan board. Hey, maybe someone out there could jump on the bandwagon and develop and release the subtitled J-G DVD set !! THANKS!!!!

FlowerLady, I wrote to Tom at your urging and this is what he replied on 4/30/04:
Sara, For a few past "Korean dramas on DVD" projects, we have used English subtitles provided by TV stations. However, as you noted earlier, many TV stations have to cut out certain sections of the drama for commercials. This really makes things complicated because their subtitles do not cover all the scenes in our "full version." When we try to match their subtitles to our full version, there are a lot of untranslated sections. Although this sounds like no big deal, it is VERY difficult to narrow down precisely which lines do not have subtitles...it takes FOREVER. We would need someone to sit and watch all 54 episodes and create subtitles from scratch...or at least follow along with the TV station subtitles and make adjustments as they watch. Big job. Let me do more investigating. Thanks! Tom

If you ask me subtitles in MORE than Engish will come out. Part of the international trade and culture stuff that is emerging as a new world influence. Possiby to show who is better.
It is PERSONAL/family security that the majority of all peoples are interested in not some rules as even religion and it does NOT work. Those are the minority that are being IGNORED.
And REALITY (from, SOMEONE) wanted. Regular TV is losing it faster each day.
Interesting soaps had femals who WROTE subtitles as career.

SARA-- Thank you!! It was really great of you to contact Tom at YesAsia.com for me/us directly. Every bit of effort may bring about this series in DVD/English subtitled format. I have a question, though---- the Chicago market is currently viewing DJG with English subtitles (thanks to the tireless diligence of Michael -- Thank you, SO MUCH, Michael -- what would we non-Korean speaking fans have done? ) Anyway, Michael has attached subtitles to the full, hour-long/non-edited version which airs on Mon. & Tues. morning in Chicago. (The "chopped" version airs on Fri. & Sat. night, to allow for the add'l sponsors.) Could something be done/sold with the full version Michael has already subtitled? **Maybe this has already been considered, but I thought I'd ask, anyway. Thanks again, Sara. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Tom from YesAsia.com did indeed send me an email, but he seemed to be writing to the station. Anyway, I'm offering the subtitle files (in GCG format) to anyone who wants it via my family website (please wait your turns.. it's a slow connection) at hanfamily.us/tgj-subtitles.htm. Oh, yeah, if you're thinking of using those files (i.e. YesAsia.com?) for commercial purposes, please let me know. I did the work and I think I deserve to know how it will be used at least. Thanks. Someone will have to figure out a way to serve the audience by providing an "add-on" to the current TV set, so people can view the subtitles separately (a separate LCD device??).. that way the subtitlist, or whoever has to provide subtitles doesn't have to deal with all "distribution/broadcasting" rights. (mucho mulas..) And if I happen to do the subtitles, then you can just download it and view it with the video. Anyone interested in designing and patenting this new product? I'm sure a prototype of this sort is patented already.. but who knows? And if you're this inventor, please don't try to make big money off of it.. I prefer not to work with capitalistic opportunists on this.
