I think she is just down right nasty. Can't imagine anyone so shallow and more concerned about status. She can really get my goat. In fact, my goat is doing tail spins. hee hee hee ;D ;D ;D

And didn't all of you nearly fall out of your chairs laughing a couple of days ago when Mal-bong got off the phone with Nastry Granny where Granny trashed Min-jae up and down and Mal-bong thought to herself "Sometimes she can be so malicious!"? Too ironic even to comment! Jade

Yes, JadeEyes, I thought that was funny, too. Mal-bong is so selfish that she never would have thought twice about Kwi-boon's bad attitude if it weren't affecting her directly. And it was funny to see Mal-bong trying to convince herself that Min-jae was a catch just because the engagement is now fait accompli. (She seems to have given up on that endeavor, though.)

Both Malbong and Granny are such nasty, spoiled little girls. God only knows how they raised such decent children. Granny needs to get a husband so she can occupy her time instead of mistreating her daughter-in-law. And then her son should adamantly oppose it!

He he heee! You're right about that. The whole family should rise up and oppose Grandma's (hypothetical) remarriage!

I THINK THAT THE MEAN GRANNY WILL STRIKE ONCE AGAIN AND BE ILL TOWARDS YU-GIN AND MIN-JAE BECAUSE HYUN-KYU LOVES AND PROBABLY MARRY A POOR GIRL AND YU-GIN'S POOR.

How did Mal-bong get so attached to Granny, anyway? They do have similar temprements, and the Oh and Suh families are close, but I think there's more.
Mal-bong has said she was close to In-hwan's first wife, so she couldn't accept Sun-young. We don't know that much about In-hwan's first wife, other than it was an arranged marriage, and Tae-il killed her in an accident. Maybe Mal-bong was a friend of hers, or perhaps a sister? That would explaing the 'Sister-in-law' thing.
If so, what would happen between her and Kum-ja? I doubt that they were actually sisters, since something that obvious would have been stated already, but maybe. . .

I can't believe that Mal-bong was related to Hyun-gyu's mother by blood. For one thing, I don't think she would've pushed the idea of a match between Hyung-gyu and Yu-jin, as they would be cousins if their mothers were sisters, and I believe marriage between cousins is taboo in Korea as it is in the US.
For another thing, if they had been sisters, I think this would've come up at the time of the memorial for Hyun-gyu's mother. And I don't think In-hwan and Dong-pyo are brothers...same thing about cousins applies, plus, then Mean Granny would be Dong-pyo's mother, too, and this does not seem to be the case. If the 2 families were friends going way back to the early days of In-hwan's first marriage, perhaps Mal-bong became a very close friend of the first wife and was almost like a sister to her, as Soju suggests. After Hyun-gyu's mother was killed in the hit and run, perhaps Mean Granny transferred her alliance from her deceased daughter-in-law to Mal-bong, and Mal-bong was happy to suck up and be on the good side of this thorny old lady.
I don't know...I just can't think of anything else. But I really can't believe either of the 2 families are blood related.
