Six more episodes to go in this one so let's plan for the rest of 2024.
First thing I'd like to do is a quick one: follow up on King of the Wind by watching that movie The Throne. It's available online for free with ads so no problem there. I watched the first half-hour of it and was very impressed, but never got back to it. It's a very interesting take on the Sado story and deserves watching now that KOTW is finished. So one weekend for The Throne.
Then I did say we'd take a look at My Dearest. Yes it's not the kind of thing we usually do here, but it got massive ratings and by the second episode it was getting into some good historical material that we've never dealt with here. Part 1 is only ten episodes and Part 2 is eleven, so we'll try the first ten and if it's not worth continuing then we'll bail after ten.
And then after that we'll do Mr. Sunshine. Netflix, unfortunately, have to pay for it. But it's only 24 episodes and maybe we can do two a week to get through it faster. It's much more modern that any historical that's ever been done here, but it's supposed to be very good and truth keeps wanting us to watch it so we'll give it a shot.
That will cover most of this year. Then maybe we'll try one of those other three pre-2000 historicals that's available online. By then we'll probably have more information about 2025 and whether or not there will be a new historical made by KBS.

Nokdu Flower which is a sort of prequel to Mr Sunshine ( Donghak peasant rebellion ) is free on Tubi and on Amazonβs free service Freevee . I liked both though i lean more toward Nokdu which is more factual despite the main characters being fictional .

Actually before we do any of those things we'll do the usual final thoughts thread here, and also I need to update the timeline to add the 2023 historicals. Should have done that already but the ugly turn this series took put me in a bad mood. It will get done though, gotta keep that thing up to date.

There is a rumor that the next traditional historical will cover Goguryeo-Sui War. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goguryeo%E2%80%93Sui_WarLast time this war was covered in a drama was in SBS Yeon Gaesomoon(2006). If true, I hope it isn't the writer of Korea-Khitan War writing it. Jeong Dojeon's writer would be good but I would also take Jingbirok writer since he has experience writing a war historical.

Wait, really there's talk about the next historical? As in, there will be one? Seriously? That is a huge relief! Between the budget pressures and the writer of this one turning into a lunatic, I feared the whole genre was done for. Wow that is wonderful news. Made my day.

Between the budget pressures and the writer of this one turning into a lunatic, I feared the whole genre was done for. The lunatic fictional storyline episode actually had the highest rating of the series. History buffs like us were upset but lot of folks who didn't know a thing about history liked that storyline I guess. Hate it or not, the fictional storyline did great for the ratings for this drama and that's probably why there's going to be another traditional historical next year. Unfortunately, the high rating for the fictional storyline might be an OK signal for another lunatic fictional storyline in the next series.

Yeah I was watching those ratings--somebody is nice enough to be posting them on Wikipedia. Was waiting for the decline that never happened. I'm going to do a chart for them when the series ends and post it here.
Like you said, it's not a good signal to future writers and producers.

Very sorry I haven't been on much lately--a bunch of family stuff to attend to. I'm still here. Next thing on the agenda is to watch The Throne, to close out the KOTW board. Then we'll get started on My Dearest, and then Mr. Sunshine.
I'll set up a thread for The Throne in the next few days and find a link for where the film is available.
