That was one thing about the King Geunchogo drama that I gave it big credit for. That story goes way back and the right thing to do was cast people we hadn't seen in a bunch of other historicals to give it a different feel. And they did, except for Choe Myeong-gil, and it worked. Not everything in that drama worked but that aspect of it did.

Some unconfirmed cast: Seon Dong Hyeok as Lee Ji Ran (played the same role in Jeong Do Jeon, you've definitely seen him before in other Daehas) Lee Gwang Gi as Jeong Do Jeon (not as big a Daeha actor but he's there, played Ha Ryun in Jeong Do Jeon) Choi Jong Hwan as Jeong Mong Ju (he's Jungjong in Ladies of the Palace and Saimdang, experienced but with SBS historicals) Lee Eung Gyeong as Jeong Do Jeon's wife (not often in historicals, her last was Empress Ki) Kim Myeong Su as Lee Banggwa (we all know this guy asdfgg Wakizaka Yasuharu in IYSS) Ye Jiwon as Queen Shindeok (her first historical!) Lee Deok Hee as Queen Shinui (played Empress Myeongdeok in Jeong Do Jeon, also very experienced in historicals)

Ha Ryun's actor in JDJ plays Jeong Dojeon?
That sounds deliberate.

So far out of the secondary characters only Lee Gwang Gi has confirmed his role as Jeong Do Jeon, as shown on an interview on the Gwangju Ilbo's YouTube. He went to Naju to visit Jeong Do Jeong's place of exile, which was built on over the years and remains in a mostly dilapidated state. He also wants to understand how Jeong Do Jeon felt while in exile here.
However production wise, we know one of the locations that's going to be filmed, Gomo Mountain Fortress:
SBS filmed a drama here last year, and they also filmed Hongcheonggi/Lovers of the Red Sky here in May. The production team (about 25 people) visited the front of the fortress as well as Jinnam Gate, filmed one scene a couple times during the morning. There were lots of lookers-on and people who just happened to be touring. KBS anticipates to begin shooting in full swing next month.

I still am not over the fact that the person who played the part of the person who contributed to Jeong Dojeon's downfall will be playing Jeong Dojeon.

Oh forgot we finally have news on director and writer! Director is Kim Hyeong Il, a usual on KBS' Daeha staff, including Dawn of the Empire, King's Dream and Book of Correction. Writer is Lee Jeong Woo, who wrote Comrades 2010 and Joseon Gunman.

Kim Hyeongil...he produced King's Dream and Book of Correction; didn't direct it so that's somewhat safe. He directed Dawn of the Empire, which I only saw bits of, so I really can't make a judgement of that. I haven't seen any of the stuff he directed himself.
You say Lee Jeongwoo was a writer in Comrades? The only names that's showing up for screenwriting credit is Lee Eun Sang and Kim Pil Jin.
I did watch some of Joseon Gunman, but I never finished it. Too much standard Kdrama stuff for my taste.

I checked some other sources and you're right, he was on the writers' team for the 1983 version, not the 2010 version. I also agree with you about Joseon Gunman, it's quite run-of-the-mill, but apparently audiences in Korea have been expressing relief that it's nobody with a reputation for wild plotlines.

Oh they are playing this very, very conservatively. The casting, the choice of subject matter...frankly it's disappointing, but considering the situation I won't complain at all. We need people to watch this one so that it's the first of many and not just a one-off.

Honestly, I hink I might not watch this because of "been there done that."
I might watch once they get past Jeong Dojeon's death.
I haven't told my mother about this drama, but I think she won't be happy about another Yi Bangwon show; her side of the family is anti-Yi Bangwon.

Park Jin Hee as Queen Wongyeong. To my knowledge she's only been in 2 historicals: Shadows in the Palace/Court Lady (2007 movie) and the 2013 Heo Jun daily drama.
Script reading was today. While filming begins in September, broadcasting begins in December. A message from the drama staff and cast: "The drama 'Taejong Lee Bang-won' was planned and produced in response to the earnest wishes and aspirations of viewers who were thirsty for traditional historical dramas. It is expected that viewers will be interested in seeing Lee Bang-won, a historical figure, from a different point of view. I will do my best to work with viewers in the hope that this drama will become a place for dialogue about the lives of various characters who have lived fiercely in the huge flow of history and who are the true leaders that the times want. Thank you for your interest and love."

Yeah that jumped out at me too.
Bangwon is hardly a warm fuzzy icon to everyone but still...especially after what happened just a few months ago with Joseon Exorcist, why would you even speak words of that sort to suggest you might mess with him. They'd better not screw this up or we'll be waiting another five years for the next one.
Oh and this Park Jin Hee person, give her credit for bravery I guess. Somebody had to go out there and play right field after Babe Ruth retired.

The subject matter is probably because they are playing it safe . Can't say i blame them considering the last one was Jingbirok which alternated between greatness and complete stupidity . This is a safe bet as Bangwon is always popular . I'm going to watch it as its been seven years since Jingbirok .I am with AKJ on this as its important to support it otherwise we will end up with more drivel like six flying dragons . If this does well you can bet MBC and SBS follow.
