This drama is an adaptation of a mid-Joseon romance story of the same name. Yearning for a Beauty (μ¬λ―ΈμΈκ³‘ in hangeul, ζηΎδΊΊζ² in Hanja) was actually written in 1585 by Jeong Cheol, a prominent official during King Seonjo's time (you might remember him from Imjin-era shows). When he was kicked out of Court in 1585, he stayed at his hometown in Changpyeong and is said to have written this story to compare his love for King Seonjo to the yearning a wife feels when she's separated from her husband. ("And they were ruler and subject!" "Oh my god they were ruler and subject") The novel was written in Hangeul in 6 parts: Introduction, Summer, Autumn, Winter, Spring and Conclusion.
The drama moves the time period down to King Hyojong's reign, and shifts the narrative a bit to act as a biopic for General Lee Wan, who helped dethrone Gwanghae during Injo's Rebellion. In line with what seemed to be the norm in 70s and early 80s dramas in Hyojong's reign (Lady of the Side Chamber, Great Vocation), heavy emphasis is placed on preparing for "Northern conquest" of Qing as revenge for the Manchurian Invasions and the Samjeondo Incident.
