The story got even better in this one. The way they built up all of the scheming and posturing was very good. And bringing in leaders of other clans to add other viewpoints, it added some complexity and made things more interesting. Plus we’re still looking for the other shoe to drop when Buyeo Jun finally strikes, but right now it isn’t clear know how or when that will happen. The unpredictability of it is fun.
But the episode was totally spoiled by all of the little-kid-in-danger stuff. It seemed odd that they would introduce a young boy prince into the middle of everything, a boy so much younger than all of his brothers. If this is why he’s in the story, then boooo hisssss. I’ve complained about this in the past—traumatized little kids used for the sake of adding emotion and impact. Kid runs into a scene with tears streaming down his face, begging for his mother, or being torn away from his mother and taken to prison, or being totally frightened by his heartless older brother...this kind of stuff is just cheap and manipulative. Come up with something better in the writing and don’t resort to traumatizing children. Blecch.
The whole business about Yeogu forcing a nasty confrontation by going to the crown prince’s home, what did he expect to gain from it? Did he really think he’d get honest answers? And going there with goons and swords? Okay he was frustrated but it seemed awfully foolish. To be fair there may have been some nuances lost in the translation.
On the plus side, some much better music in this one. Especially during the deliberation scenes. At times it was a little too strong but on the whole it was better. A welcome improvement because the music had been dragging the series down.
Yeochan showing the self-enhanced cut on his arm: “Is this the result of a minor quarrel between two brothers?” Um, yeah it sure can be. Brothers can be rough with each other sometimes.to the point of being total idiots. Fortunately nobody seemed too convinced by it.
Why were Yeogu and his men hung upside-down in their prison cell? I’ve never seen anything like that in any historical before, or anywere else, for that matter.
Right now Prince Yeohwi is exactly the same as Choe Yangbaek in the middle of GOW. Controls a lot of law-enforcement muscle and it being backed into a corner between what duty dictates and what he knows is right. Hope he makes a better choice than Yangbaek did.
“How could you turn me into such a despicable witch?” Yeah I’ll go along with that one. I hope they don’t squander Choe Myoung-gil by turning her character into a wicked-queen Disney villain now.
