The summary that started the episode was very well put together. I guess the idea was that two episodes air every weekend so they started the fifth episode with this to bring people up to speed if they hadn’t watched the first couple of weekends. They had a shorter summary to start the third episode, so that must be the purpose. Anyway it was well done.
And then we also got that very helpful stretch of narration, with some good images and a glimpse of a map showing where the Daifang territory was...
At the time, Baekje was under the political control of two major clans, the Hae and Jin. Making Seori Fortress in the northeast their stronghold, the Jin clan backed King Biryu, while the Hae, based on Choseongni Fortress up north, had been supporting Lord of Wirye Palace Buyeo Jun, and his rivalry with Biryu. This political strife was the very reason why, despite the propitious conception dream which preceded his birth, Buyeo Gu was ultimately banished by his father. What Biryu tried to stop was internal strife which would damage Baekje’s stability, as the two clans would battle over succession rights.
...it confirms why Yeogu was banished, which hadn’t been explained yet. Still waiting for some detail on that conception dream; that was mentioned once before and obviously it’s a big deal so we could use some explanation. Have to think it’s coming, since the series hasn’t shown itself to be sloppy about forgetting things in the writing.
Just in case anybody else forgot like I did for a while, the Mohe were originally trying to help in that assassination attempt against Biryu. That’s why their chief was brought to Biryu as a prisoner even though the Mohe helped Baekje capture Moro Fortress.
Just a couple of gripes to mention. One was we got some evil laughter. Blecch, stop it. I hope it doesn’t keep up. The other: again Yeohwa manages to find Yeogu out there in some random place in the countryside. How does she know just where to go? Already it’s getting annoying.
Hey look at all the archers! And up there on a ridge where you’d expect archers to be. Good job writers and producers.
Goguryeo king: “I can imagine the sense of inferiority that your brothers forced upon you.” Wow there’s some insight. Once again a hopeful sign from a bit of writing, that we’ll get some good character depth.
It was nice to see the happiness on Jin Saha’s face when Yeogu returned home. But shouldn’t Yeogu have paid his respects to the queen first? Not sure what the protocol would be on that but it just sort of felt wrong.
Actually there’s a lot going on right now, just as far as all of the political intrigue and everybody’s different motivations. It’s good to see that we’re being given a fairly complex storyline to keep up with. Still nothing about the series to go crazy-happy over but it’s not bad so far, certainly worth watching.
