After setting up the whole thing about JYS being still alive and out there in the countryside, I certainly expected his re-emergence to be entertaining...but there was nothing. Yi Cheon punched him, Sejong's jaw dropped, JYS walked into the courtyard, and that was it. Very surprised they didn't come up with something better after all that.
On the other hand, I really liked the scene with JYS showing Ju Taegang the public clock. Showing the marketplace that sprung up around the clock, it made the point beautifully about the value of reliable clocks to the lives of ordinary people and the impact on commerce. And tying it into the flashback from the visit to Ming, very nice.
Yi Cheon is grabbing his hand like he hurt it punching JYS. Hope you did, you idiot.
So now JYS is Isaac Newton?!? Persimmon falling on his head? Boo hiss. That was dumb and unnecessary.
So JYS was involved with developing the court music after all. There's one gold star for this series; they didn't work the music story into GKS at all and I've enjoyed what we learned of it here. And we can put a pyeongyeong on our smartphones too, how about that!
Umm...before all you officials start swooning about Huije's water clock, don't you think you should take a look at the thing? Like, make sure it actually works? Geez! Now JYS is gonna make you all look like fools for jumping on the bandwagon so quickly. Serves you right.
Other than the music story, not much of anything in real history happened in this entire episode. Some of it was a showcase for the star, especially that long speech on the village bridge. The rest of it was just a character-drama episode. Is it reasonable to characterize this series as much more MBC style than KBS style? As a fictional story it isn't bad at all, but the way they've turned the outline of a historical period into a vehicle for a character drama, it just seems like the kind of thing MBC does all the time.
