In episode 49 we see JD with a completed text that he's written. It's called "Bulsijabpyeon" and it's an argument against Buddhism. I was looking around online for any background information I could find about it, and amazingly I found a complete English translation of the entire text. Here it is: www.acmuller.net/jeong-gihwa/bulssijapbyeon.htmlIt's very heavy stuff; lots of philosophical arguments about Buddhist concepts that most Westerners know nothing about. But how great is it to be able to read something actually written by JD! Especially after spending 49 episodes watching his life story. The translation was done by a University of Tokyo professor named A. Charles Muller, so full credit to him for his generosity. P.S. Just to be clear about this: I don't post the above link because I have any negative feelings about Buddhism. The purpose is simply to call attention to a historical document written by Jeong Dojeon that was translated into English and can be read by English speakers. No offense is intended to anyone who practices Buddhism. In fact, if there's a historical document out there that answers JD's arguments and is in English I will be happy to add that link here.

Okay, it seems I've solved my own problem! It turns out that a Buddhist monk named Gihwa did indeed write a response to JD's arguments, and Professor Muller translated that one as well. Here's a link to an overview page on Prof. Muller's website that provides both texts, along with an introduction and bibliography. www.acmuller.net/jeong-gihwa/The introduction is no quick read; it's long and it looks like a very thorough explanation of the back-and-forth between Buddhism and Confucianism in East Asia. Haven't read it yet but it looks very good.
