This one may be incomplete. I had a taping mishap and didn't get 5-10 minutes of the middle of the episode. I'll catch the rebroadcast on Saturday morning and add anything significant that isn't mentioned below. My apologies.
JD is trying to get a read on Lee Seonggye--figure out what kind of person he's dealing with. Lee is guarded (which he usually is anyway). JD hands him a document. It's a combination defense strategy / governing plan for the southern border area where they are right now; a way to protect and secure it in the aftermath of the pirate attacks. JD tells him his life is in danger; that Lee In Im is inevitably going to have him killed, but "I know a way for you to survive." Lee is curious but skeptical. What does JD want from him in return? Give me a position if you survive, he says. But Lee has heard about JD kneeling before Lee In Im and asking to join In Im's political party...so he doubts JD's sincerity and wonders if he's a spy In Im sent. Their conversation ends soon afterwards, and not the way JD wanted. Not for now. As he leaves the camp, JD tells him, "There isn't anything you can't do" with an army as good as yours is (hint, hint) and tells Lee that they'll meet again.
Later, Bangwon is visiting his father and looking at JD's plan. He's extremely impressed by it, as is everyone else. Good enough, Bangwon says, to send the capital and use as a reason to keep his father from having to return there and face the trouble that's been trumped up for him. And there's even more trouble now, because that snarling military inspector returned with an incriminating report and the ministers are discussing it, with In Im's flunkies suggesting that Lee didn't give that missing rice to hungry locals, he stole it.
Hmmm...this can't be good. Yeom Heungbang shows up at Seonggye's camp; says he came on the council's behalf to reward Seonggye for his recent victories. He's being overly friendly, but Seonggye is polite to him and accepts Yeom's flattery graciously. There are a lot of books sitting on tables in the meeting room, and Yeom happens to spot one that shocks him. And then spots a piece of paper that shocks him.
Next morning: Yeom is gone already! Was supposed to be there for a few days. But he's gone...and we saw him steal that book and paper. Why? Yeom brings them straight to Lee In Im.
The king has turned into a drunken lech. He's trying to hit on Jeongbi and neglecting his wife. But Lee In Im breaks up the fun by showing up and asking for a royal order to summon Seonggye back to the capital.
Bangwon was so impressed by that plan document, he goes to JD's house. JD walks out of the front door and is disgusted to realize that Seonggye's son is the one who killed Cheonbok and acted like a jerk about it. But he maintains his composure and asks what Bangwon wants. Turns out, that plan document did Seonggye a lot of good (I missed that part) and Bangwon has brought silver to reward JD. And offers him a position as his father's strategist. No deal, JD says: "I could be a partner in achieving a cause but I'm not interested in being a schemer." And adds, "Im the only person in Goryeo who knows how to save your father." Bangwon leaves, shaking his head about JD's seeming arrogance.
Seonggye realizes that a book is missing. Then Jeong Mongju shows up with the royal order; Lee In Im had him deliver it personally. But Mongju doesn't even know what the reason is for the summons.
Lee In Im asks his subordinates what Seonggye's "vital spot" is. Answer: his family. "Go for his vital spot. Right now." Later, we see Seonggye's sons Banggwa and Bangui return from visiting their father just in time for troops to surround the house and place the whole family under house arrest! And elsewhere, Bangwon and his friend Yeonggyu are walking down a quiet street when suddenly a squad of troops rushes them. Bangwon manages to escape after a brief fight, because Yeonggyu (who's very good at martial arts, we see) gives himself up for his friend's sake. Bangwon runs straight to JD's house, but JD isn't there; Mongju took him somewhere.
Choi Yeong confronts Lee In Im about the order and the treatment of Seonggye's family. He's furious that In Im went over the council's head. But In Im produces the mystery book. It's called Daehagyeonui. "It is literature for a king." Which shows, In Im says, "he has a traitorous mind." And the paper has some sort of philosophy or guidelines on how a king should conduct himself; In Im says Seonggye wrote this himself. We'll have a "national interrogation" and get the truth, In Im says, and warns Choi to stay out of it. Choi is so flabbergasted he's at a loss for words.
Back at the camp, Mongju connects the missing book to the summons. Seonggye gets right to the point: "Is there a way out?" Mongju has brought him the way out: JD. So JD and Seonggye talk again, privately. JD looks stronger and more confident than we've ever seen him. But Seonggye is still wary of him. "There is a great cause I'm seeking," JD says. "It will only be possible with you. That is why I'm trying to save you." He hands Seonggye some sort of book, probably another comprehensive plan. And says it. "I'd like you to be the king of a new country." In moments Seonggye has put a sword to JD's throat.
