It's left to consort Jeongbi, sitting with the queen dowager and the prime minister, to ask the obvious question: Why would Lee In Im want Jeong Dojeon to escort the Yuan envoys, knowing how much he dislikes the Yuan?
And Lee tells JD exactly why: He's hoping JD will refuse the order so that he'll be kicked out of the government. And it's working. Between JD grabbing Lee by the collar and shaking him, and his going around to everybody else and acting like an arrogant, disrespectful jerk, and yes, refusing to obey the order, it ends up with ministers going to the king and the QD and demanding that JD be punished. Choi Yeong even says he should be executed! Lee In Im isn't there; he's staying at home and refusing to go to work until JD is punished. Figures his absence will force the issue and end it.
But no! Now the scholars have taken over the yard around the royal Confucian shrine in the Sungkyunkwan campus. JD is inside the shrine--a real sit-in. And apparently this prevents the reception of envoys (something to do with the shrine's official role in receiving envoys that requires it be available). So it stops the whole diplomatic process.
Northern territories: Lee Seonggye has been tracking the Yuan army's movements, and sends out a scouting party that ends up getting in a skirmish with the Yuan and gets his subordinate Gaenam killed. Im Gyeongmi, who seems to be the commanding general up there, tells Lee to just ignore the Yuan. He doesn't like Lee and treats him disrespectfully, but he's also trying to keep the peace at the border while the diplomacy plays out.
Uh-oh--Choi Yeong has shown up in the shrine yard with lots of soldiers, who proceed to rough up the scholars and clear the place. And he tells Jeong Mongju that if JD doesn't come outside and surrender himself by sunrise, he'll go in and get him! No matter that it's a sacred shrine.
At an urgent evening meeting, JM is trying to rally the other scholars to JD's defense, even at the cost of their lives. Nearly all of them pledge their support...until the head scholar Lee Saek shows up and scolds them all, and accuses JM of letting his personal friendship with JD cloud his thinking. "Lee In Im won this fight," he tells them; "admit defeat and make future plans."
Lee In Im hears about this. "I thought I would get rid of all those bugs. I fogot about Lee Saek. Too bad." Then JM shows up, wanting to negotiate a settlement for JD. Lee holds all the cards, though....
Sunrise: A hungry, dehydrated JD comes out of the shrine. Lee In Im reads a royal order of punishment, stripping JD of his rank and exiling him to Naju, in the far southwest. JD proceeds to laugh in Lee's face. "I was too lacking to prevent a conspiracy of treacherous subjects. I will gladly accept this punishment. Thank you Your Majesty!" Later, before JD leaves for exile, Lee offers him "any position you desire" if he'll switch allegiances and work for him. No deal.
Choi Yeong has come to the northern territories. Tells Lee Seonggye that after all of his meritorious service in the field, he deserves a position in the capital. But Lee declines; says he's happy up here in the open country and that "Gaegyeong is a little stuffy." Later Lee goes to the capital to meet Lee In Im, who orders him to escort the Yuan envoys to Gaegyeong.
Lee In Im learns that one of Kim Ui's subordinates is in Gaegyeong to check on Kim's family. Lee is angry at hearing this and says that Kim "will see his family when friendly relations are achieved." So is Lee holding them captive to force Kim's subservience?
We see the subordinate in the capital. As a couple of the scholars watch from a distance, the guy goes into An Sagi's house. Somehow (not clear to me) it tips them off that "There was someone behind Kim Ui."
JD arrives at Naju. He sits down on what looks like a bench but really is part of an outdoor altar used for local ancestral rites. A woman angrily tells him to get off it, but he refuses and then proceeds to lay down on it to take a nap! Some villagers see this and now they're ready to attack him.
