Well, “Yellow Handkerchief” concluded last night, and it didn’t really go out with a bang. Rather, as the final episode concluded, I was left with such complicated feelings of both warmth and sadness about the show – feelings entirely appropriate, perhaps, for a drama whose overall theme was devotion and forgiveness.
I have to say that it was the second-to-last episode that really impressed me. It was just dripping with emotion – and it worked, even on a perpetually crabby individual like me (though I only needed one Kleenex, thank you – wouldn’t have been a very manly thing to have needed more than that, right)?
I felt that the final episode was good, but by then I felt like I was being a little manipulated. It just seemed to be trying a little TOO hard to tug at our heartstrings. Mikey didn’t need Kleenex for the final episode last night (but, by then, maybe I’d just reverted to crabby ol’ Mikey mode). But it did wrap things up in a very satisfying manner. YH ended well: I’m sorry to see it go, but I think it ended when the time came for it to say good-bye.
Replacing YH in Los Angeles (and, in all likelihood, Chicago) will indeed be “One Million Roses.” Can’t possibly be as good as YH, right?
Maybe . . . but I seem to recall saying the same thing about YH when its predecessor (“To Be With You”) concluded early this spring. TBWY was a really fine series, strong in characterizations, though admittedly not so strong, perhaps, in plot. Nonetheless, I loved it, and I doubted that the next one up would match it. Well, surprise: “Yellow Handkerchief” not only fully equaled TBWY in its characterizations, but it well surpassed TBWY with its unexpectedly rich and complicated plot.
Even if it doesn’t quite measure up to YH, though, I sure hope that “One Million Roses” turns out to be at least a worthy successor. Guess we’ll all find out soon enough, won’t we?

I agree that the next to last episode was much more emotional. I was actually very disappointed in the last episode. It left some things ... hanging. it didn't show either MR or her mother's baby's. I was left feeling cheated. there were other sub-stories that just didn't have a conclusion. I cried over MJ & SM. I thought the love they showed for each other was so honest & open. I hope I enjoy OMR as much as I have YH......

Gotta be careful here – don’t want to spoil anything for the Chicago crowd – but I agree it was weird how all the secondary YH plotlines got so shunted aside towards the end. I also wish they’d resolved them a little more fully.

Well, I viewed the final episode again at Soompi and what do you know, there were several scenes of the missing characters that were edited from the LA broadcast.

I was thinking the same thing. For a final episode, some characters were left hanging. Well, I viewed the final episode again at Soompi and what do you know, there were several scenes of the missing characters that were edited from the LA broadcast. Wouldn't you know . . . around the middle of YH (episode 70 or 80) KTE pretty much eliminated the edits, expanding YH to a full 35 minutes or so of actual programming. I noticed lately, though, that KTE had begun to revert to their old ways. The final episode only clocked 28 minutes -- meaning that a full 7 minutes of that final episode ended up getting cut. Bummer -- but at least that helps to explain the somewhat disappointing conclusion. Mikey

A few posts ago some one said some thing about two fast fowards-where are ff placed are they significant ff? Possible (rather minor) spoiler regarding YH Fast-Forwards: * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The fast-forwards were really no big deal -- they happen near the very end, and they only shoot forward a few months at a time (from Ja-young being a little pregnant to her being VERY pregnant, and then to a few months later, after the kid is born). These fast-forwards were not nearly as earth-shattering as I'd been led to believe -- Mikey

Hey, I guess it's safe for all you Chicagoians to read this thread now, huh? Bet you're sorry to see YH end!
So, what'd y'all think?

Mikey,
I watch Yellow Handkerchief out of Philadelphia. I think it ends here on November 24th or 25th.
I felt the same way as you did when To Be With You ended. I was sad, and wasn't even planning on watching YH. Could not imagine that I would enjoy the Yellow Handkerchief as much as "To Be With You". I started watching "To Be With You" after it had been on the TV for 1-2 months. I got hooked right away! This was the first Korean drama I had ever watched. I never really looked at Channel 20 (WYBE). One night I was going through the channels, and saw To Be With You with English subtitles, and the only reason I kept watching the show was because of my interest in other cultures.
The first night Yellow Handkerchief was on, I watched 5 minutes, and changed the channel. My main reason for doing that was, I felt the YH was more Americanized with big businesses, and everyone had a cell phone. It seemed so different from the drama "To Be With You", which I feel had more of the Korean culture in it.
Two nights later, I turned the Yellow Handkerchief on again, and I had to make myself watch it. This is hard to believe, because now I do not want it to end. It was the scene when Sang-min was breaking up with Ja-Young. My heart just want out to Ja-Young, and I have been hooked ever since.
Maybe since everyone is really sad Yellow Handkerchief is ending, we could somehow get in touch with the writers of this drama, and they could possible have a part 2 of the Yellow Handkerchief next year. I see where the story can continue, don't you? That was the one thing I did not like about "To Be With You", it ended very abruptedly.
All I can hope for is finding a store that will sell the Yellow Handkerchief tapes, and they will not be too expensive.
Take Care.
Jean

OK, LA! Now we can talk! In Chicago they showed MR's baby and her mom's baby. Her mom's baby was pretty big! Sun Joo finally had me believing that she really loved her boyfriend, the way she looked at him while they exchanged rings. I can't say the same for the newlywed couple Na Young and Ki Hoon, though. Do you guys in LA even remember the last episodes? ;D You've had a lot of OMR to help you forget!
