Oh we have people from all over the place here. Where are you from? The forum was started in 2003 by people in Chicago who were watching English-subbed Korean shows on the small low-power Korean broadcast TV station we have here. But as the years have passed and especially as more new and old shows are available online, we've had people show up from all over the USA and from many different countries.
Actually there used to be a bunch of these USA forums. One was in Philadephia, one was in Hawaii, there were one or two in California...may have been one in New York, I can't remember...but I don't know if any of the others are still around. Unfortunately KBS abandoned the American market in 2010 and stopped making its shows available to broadcast stations; it was a stupid move and killed a lot of the interest that had built up over the years. They came back eventually but the damage was done.
Anyway yeah this kind of a form is a good place for talking about these shows. Hope you can keep visiting us and sharing your thoughts.

I think this one is now, the last man(or women) standing AKJ, sure there are newer places like Crunchy Roll, but they are idol based .
I am sure this is the only board now, that some of us(not all)could not care less about some idols new romantic comedy, but will do back flips for 500 Years Of Joseon .Nothing against idol drama's, found a few good ones myself, but my meaning is, probably younger peeps who visit crunchy roll, could care less about an old sageuk, but for a few of us, its like finding buried treasure .

Wow if that's true then it's really sad. You'd think even the contemporary dramas would be enough to keep a bunch of these kinds of forums active.
Well this one isn't going anywhere, even if it continues to be just the small group of us, and me watching one historical episode a week. Sometimes these things tend to go in cycles so there may well be a resurgence of interest down the road at some point.
My only frustration right now is that we can't all watch a historical together that you guys haven't already seen. Nothing new is being made and the networks continue to refuse to open their stores of older series. But hopefully one or the other of those will change soon too.

Yes it's really hard to find forums like this nowadays so I am really glad this one exist. Most of the forums about dramas gets mixed up by fans trying to promote the actors/actresses that's starring in the drama, so instead of focusing on the drama, the drama thread often ends up being a thread about celebrities.

What's this? A post in a k-drama from 8 years ago, you say??? From someone who hasn't posted in years? YES, because in KHD-Starved Southern California, this show is NOW ON!!!! A new (to me?) TV channel has begun airing older Kdramas in the 1pm time slot weekdays, as part of the NTD network. They finished up KBS' Bread, Love & Dreams 2 weeks ago (it was great), and now are airing EMPRESS KI. This is my first MBC drama (everything here has been KBS-America) and I couldn't be happier, even if it turns out crappy, to find a KHD on the air. I do see some familiar faces in the cast, but most are new to me. And this station re-formats the episodes to fit in the 1 hr time slot with commercials, so the scene cuts are a bit off, but I'LL TAKE IT! (sense the desperation?)
Maybe if I'm real lucky Lee Deok-Hwa will make a cameo appearance! (I can dream, right?)
Now if they would only air Dae Jo Young....I've yet to find it with Eng Subtitles....sigh.

Hey steve! Nice to hear from you again, always enjoyed what you had to say about the historicals when we could all watch them together.
That's good news to hear you guys are getting something at least. Empress Ki is a stinker, I tried to watch it but had to bail real quickly. But yeah I can understand your being grateful for anything after getting nothing for so long. So put a clothespin over your nose and get your fix.
I'll keep an eye out for DJY for you. Let us know what you think of Empress Ki as you watch it.

Thank you, AJK. I am very pleased to be able to have something to post about! It's been so grim on KBS here, I tried watching "Revolutionary Sisters" but it didn't hold my interest.
I'm not a student of Korean History and I have not seen QSD, so my reviews are mostly on the entertainment value of this series and not a comparison to anything similar. I realize Empress Ki is hardly up there with Great King Sejong, but given the situation, I find it very entertaining. We're on "episode 20" which, given all the heavy edits, is probably more like Episode 15~17. One thing I do like, and find to be very unique are the occasional light-hearted "fantasy?" sequences when the main characters minds drift off. Some of these are very funny, and most unusual from the KHDs I've seen before. There are some plot holes, and I get the feeling the writers were either in a rush, or this was their first multi-episode series to write for.
I do like the casting, especially to see Lee Won-Jong (one of my favorite characters in GKS). And Joen Kuk-Hwan is a frightening villain, so well cast!

I just got a message from one of our longtime veteran members who found Empress Ki running here in Chicago! Steve found it on the NTD network, which I hed never heard of before, in the Los Angeles area. Well turns out that NTD is running on digital subchannel 13.3 over the air here in Chicago. It's also carried locally by Comcast on their cable channel 389.
According to their website, NTD stands for New Tang Dynasty and was "founded in 2001 by Chinese-Americans who fled communism." It claims to be nonpartisan and "free from external influence"...don't know if that's actually true or not, haven't watched the network. But they at least are running a Korean historical.
I'm trying to get more scheduling information and will post it as I find it. Thanks to BungalowDweller for the tip!

Well, this series ended a couple of weeks ago, it's been replaced by some K-drama involving some seamstresses and their family competition (or something like that). It didn't seem very interesting. As far as Empress Ki goes, it was interesting, and I would agree with some of the comments here. It seemed to settle into a cycle of "Conspiracy against Nyang/Nyang outfoxes them" rinse & repeat. Unfortunately the last episode was way too rushed and they crammed too much into it. It could have easily been 2 episodes, if not three. Would have been interesting for their take on the rebellion against Yuan and relations with Koryo, post Wang-Yu. But it was a nice to see any KHD, and I am sorry that it ended its run. Hopefully NTD network sees fit to reprise another KHD in the near future.
