Not that we have a shortage of interesting kdramas that just rolled out, but for fans of taut, top-notch dramas, MBC's 2013 Scandal: A Shocking... is a gift.
,
From its first minutes, you know the director and screenwriter have respect for their craft and viewers. The highest compliment I can pay a kdrama is that it views as a movie, and in this case, an indie, With its primary lack of familiar faces but oh-so outstanding leading actors, together with the confident, thought-out storytelling, I found I couldn't take my eyes off the screen for even a minute, in case I'd miss what the director thought was important enough to put there.
Add to that, the surprisingly sexualized lines and interactions between a mistress and the married chaebol heir.
The musical accompaniment is perfect, doing what a film score should: partner with the storyline to enhance but not overpower the story itself. (Or compensate for a technically-arid script.)
This is basically a story of two families intersecting: one includes a widower-detective and his young son and the other a chaebol-heir, his legal wife and son, and mistress and daughter. The chaebol's son looms prominently. Don't let my terse description fool you. For Scandal: A Shocking... is one heckuva story and the little I knew about it viewing its first 2 eps, made it the rich experience that was intended.
In Ep 1, the action moves seamlessly from the present day back to the 2 days preceding the 1988 Seoul Olympics. That adds interest to the story but only a modicum of impetus for events soon to follow.
The norm in kdramas is to drag on from Eps 3-8, so who know what lies ahead? But I have complete confidence going forward from Eps 1 & 2 that just aired, that whatever it is will be masterful and keep me moving forward engrossed. Near Eps 1 & 2 endings, I was held riveted, with only a lame, "oh, my God" escaping me at their endings, I was still so held in astonishment.
I look forward to seeing whether Scandal: A Shocking... wins any Drama awards, and if not who does. It just better not be one of those over-commercialized fluff pieces.
Eps 1 & 2 (of 36 eps) debuted this past Sat & Sun at 9:50pm on MBC 24.5, with reruns Mon & Tues at 3:00pm. Unfortunately, Scandal: A Shocking... isn't available on DramaFever, but I did find it on www.viki.com.
Mod note: Edited post to remove DramaCrazy link. The real DramaCrazy (dot net) website closed in July. Other DramaCrazy clones are virus/malware infected websites.
