I thought it would be best if there was a Doctor Who thread, since there's a GOT thread.
Two more months until The Day of the Doctor arrives.
Here's the trailer celebrating one of Britain's iconic pop culture icon.

Yeehah, what a good idea sageuk. When I have time later today, I'll see if it's worthwhile to move some of those posts from the original thread to this one. (They may be too snarled up in the subject matter there, but I'll see what I can work out.) And thanks for the trailer.

PBS here in Chicago is running revival Season 7, which is one year behind the BBC. It starts tomorrow on 11.2. So with reference to Chicago, this thread should be considered a spoiler thread.
Thanks for the trailer, sageuk...frankly it doesn't look very good. Hope the actual episode is up to the occasion.

I think its actually a dang good trailer. While it doesn't reveal anything about the special, the montage of the history of the previous Doctors are brilliant to look at even if they're all still (and coming from someone whose pretty recent to Who); its like experiencing a exhibit of rich history. Smith's delivery of lines and the remix of the theme help amp it up for me. I like it alot more than most teasers these days.

I suppose if someone is newer to the show and less familiar with its history it might look more interesting. Personally I'm sick of the series trotting out its history whenever it's in its own interest and then trashing it in its stories just because the producers are too lazy to come up with better ideas.

Doctor Who related stuff outside of the TV show. Last year comics company IDW made a crossover between two of pop culture's biggest sci-fi franchises, between Doctor Who and Star Trek. It is called Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who: Assimilation. In it, the Eleventh Doctor and the Ponds meet the Enterprise crew led by Jean-luc Picard and find that the Borg and the Cybermen have formed an alliance. One of the issues also does a "flashback" crossover with the Fourth Doctor meeting the original Enterprise trio, Kirk, SPock and McCoy. Its a really good read. You can read it here: the-red-corpse.tumblr.com/tagged/Assimilation

Anyone read the crossover?

Not my kind of thing. Glad you liked it, though.
Had to laugh that they're only showing the 50th in a small number of theaters. When they did The Five Doctors for the 25th, there was all kinds of commotion because we got it here in the US before the UK did. We saw it on the exact 25th anniversary date but UK had to wait a few days. Something like that. I enjoyed The Five Doctors; it was well done.

Anyone got a favorite Doctor and companion?

Off the cuff, my favorite companion is Donna (Catherine Tate). Doctor, I would have to say Baker (Tom--not the unfortunate misunderstood Colin) as he was my "first." (tmi?) To me, Tom Baker is "THE" doctor. I'm pretty sure I didn't watch it while he was on the air, I started watching in Illinois. When I was in college in Wisconsin, I went to visit a friend at Madison UW and they were showing an episode starring Peter Davison, who I definitely did not like at all (I like him in other stuff).
Yeah. TMI.

Ah yeah, Tom Baker. He's the most popular choice. Watching some of the old Who episodes, its easy to see why. Those eyes.. Just...those eyes.....
Oh, and a new trailer for Day of the Doctor.
- - - - It appears that the Hurt Doctor was the one in the Time War......bummer......
EDIT: Oh and a clip.

Most Americans will say Tom Baker because when PBS was running the show in the 70s and 80s and it started getting really popular, it was heavy doses of Baker episodes. All of the first six seasons/two doctors, we only saw those once through because they're in b/w and heaven forbid they'd show b/w. Which is nothing against Baker--he was very good, brought a lot of charisma to it. But I liked Davison a lot too. When you have a good story, you don't want it dominated by one actor and Davison had a low-key style that worked real well. And then, Troughton brought a chaotic energy to the part and that worked real well in a lot of his stories (at least the ones that survive). And for all the things about the revival that have totally pissed me off, Tennant is as good as anybody who's had the role.
Best companion...I liked Donna Noble, too. It was nice to have a character who wasn't model-pretty and was rough around the edges and was more of a regular person. Excellent actress, too. Tegan was pretty good, too...and then if you go way back, Jamie the Scotsman was fun, and then right at the beginning, the idea of having two teachers trying to make sense out of all of this time-travel stuff, it was an interesting idea. The show was a lot different then, of course, so those early companions are tough to compare.
Worst doctor--there haven't really been any stinkers. Paul McGann was just in the one movie so that's not much to go on, but he didn't seem right for the part...neither did Eccleston; more of a James Bond type...and Matt Smith, too young, seemed too much like a grad student (although he's gotten better as time has passed). People will probably mutter about Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy, too, but the show was starting to lose its way in those seasons and you can't blame them for that.
Worst companion--I didn't think anybody would out-annoy Peri Brown...until Rose Tyler. What a dumb character. Hey, we need women viewers so let's create Buffy the Alien Vampire Slayer and the Doctor will fall in love with her. AAAUUGGGGHHHHHHHHHH

Well, I'm starting to percieve why ajk here is a bit adamant about Day of the Doctor. One he dislikes Rose Tyler, who is coming back for the celebration. He must have thought "AARRRRRRGGGGGGGH!!!!!
Second, you've probably seen the trailer by now and seen that the Daleks are back, and you've complained before that the Daleks have been overused, and since they've been constantly established to be wiped out, their return lessens the impact more and more. I dunno about you, but the Doctor encountering Daleks from a different time period is probably alot more creative than there being a survivor.
Oh, and here's something for you Donna fans. A month ago Catherine Tate was rumored to be coming back for the 50th, based on the news that she was seen at the set. Nothing has been said in regards to this, and for all we know, Tate could have just been visiting Tennant; its been said that the two became really good friends during their run together, so a friendly meeting is more likely.
- - - And for those wondering why I say bummer in regards to the Hurt Doctor being in the Time War, its been said that this guy did something so terrible to the point he's not considered a Doctor-to the point he's his greatest secret, and yet the Doctors have always acknowledged their role in wiping out the Time Lords!

Did not watch the trailer because I didn't want to know anything about the show.
