I've been meaning to go back and read all the posts to this board in succession, but I have not had the time yet. So maybe people have discussed this one already, but I've been thinking about it because I was thinking about how nice "Grandma Wey's" house is--for a little house. And about where the bathroom is, sort of separated and private. And then that reminded me of all the times we see scenes taking place in the bathroom, or scenes about what's happening in the bathroom, and I find this just hilarious.
Can you imagine, on "General Hospital", Carly and Sonny discussing what they were going to do about Carly's aged mother while Sonny squatted in the tub with his pants rolled up, cleaning the tub because Carly's pregnant and she's got too much work already? And her telling him, you missed that spot, you're not working fast enough? Like what happened with Goeun and her husband on "Who's My Love"? No, you cannot imagine it, because on American soaps, bathrooms only contain showers for steamy sex scenes, and no one ever cleans the things.
A character would NEVER be shown going into the bathroom in the middle of the night and then come back to say she was bleeding; she would wake up with a stricken look on her face and say, "I'm having a miscarriage!" because she'd know by magic. No one would EVER stand outside a bathroom yelling, "Why are you taking so long in there, Grandpa!" You'd NEVER see someone with his head drooping into the toilet, barfing his brains out, because toilets are taboo on American network TV.
I first noticed this on "Who's My Love" because they had a LOT of scenes involving the bathroom--the cleaning of it, complaining about it, needing to use it when someone else is in there...because it was about a huge household of people with limited facilities, and that's part of that package. I just find this so refreshing. And it's not gross, either. It just seems normal and everyday and what happens at real people's houses.
