This is a fictional tale of Jang Ok Jung aka Jang Hee Bin as a fashion designer. If I tune in, it'll be for the parts with Han Seung Yeon from KARA. I'll most likely take screen shots of her scenes. Much like I did with Lizzy & Rascal Sons.

The series certainly isn't lacking in eye candy. These romance sageuks all seem to be written the same way. They knew each other as kids. Reunited as adults. You have the overly jealous queen. The main girl serves the King. That's easily the same description for Moon that Embraces the Sun. The only major difference is, instead of a shaman, she's a fashion designer.
I'm probably one of the few viewers that sympathized with the queen in Moon that Embraces the Sun. She wasn't a nice person but it's a precarious position to be in. The pressure to produce an heir must have been intense.
Choi Suk Bin's (played by Han Seung Yeon) role in this series seems to be small. The future King Yeongjo isn't expected to appear either.

Before JOJ started, I promised screen shots of Han Seung Yeon as Choi Suk Bin. I intend to keep that promise. I'm not watching this series but am keeping tabs on it through recaps. 10 eps have aired so far and she hasn't appeared yet. Once she does, I'll start posting the screen shots and some info about the scene(s). Jae Hee is yet to be heard from as well. Currently in the series, Queen In Hyun just became the queen and Jang Ok Jung became a royal consort. ZIA - Dream On You

Han Seung Yeon finally appears as "Maid Choi" in ep 16. It's towards the end of the episode. She's with other palace maids. King Sukjong is passing by. She can't help but stare at him. She is reprimanded by a superior for standing there daydreaming. The scene is under a minute long. SBS uploaded this scene to YT. Maid Choi - JOJ Ep 16

Maid Choi appears again in ep 17. She runs into Chi Soo by Jang Hee Bin's quarters. They watch King Sukjong and Jang Hee Bin pass by. While he stares at Jang Hee Bin, she looks at King Sukjong. Maid Choi tells Chi Soo that Jang Hee Bin is pregnant. She asks why he's there and doesn't believe that he's merely sightseeing. She remarks that he has the same look in his eyes that she does. After he leaves, we get a flashback to Maid Choi's first encounter with Jang Ok Jung back in ep 1. The entire scene is 3 mins long. She doesn't appear in ep 18. Maid Choi - JOJ Ep 17

Maid Choi appears twice in ep 19. After Queen In Hyun is deposed, Jang Ok Jung is headed to see King Sukjong. She spots Maid Choi passing by with a tray. Later, she goes to greet Queen In Hyun at her new residence outside the palace. Maid Choi - JOJ Ep 19Maid Choi appears several times in ep 20. I expect her to play a bigger role going forward. Chi Soo and Queen In Hyun devise a plan for Maid Choi to seduce King Sukjong. He doesn't fall for it but allows everyone to think they slept together. Jang Ok Jung is furious when she gets the news. She has her maids bring Maid Choi to her and personally dishes out the punishment. King Sukjong happens to stop by at the same time. He's not happy when he realizes what his new queen did to Maid Choi. Maid Choi - JOJ Ep 20 Pt 1Maid Choi - JOJ Ep 20 Pt 2

According to the production team, this is a fusion sageuk so it's not a big deal. I never had high hopes for this series anyway. Because I'm a KARA fan I watch and screen shot the scenes with Han Seung Yeon.

Maid Choi is promoted to Suk Won in ep 21. Queen Jang (JOJ) warns Choi Suk Won that she won't be receiving the king's grace again. Choi Suk Won responds that if it happened once, it can happen again. King Sukjong shows Choi Suk Won how to use a bow and arrow to make Queen Jang jealous. Choi Suk Won pretends to be reading a book as King Sukjong passes by. The book tells the story of a man who left his wife for an evil mistress. King Sukjong knows the story is really about him, Queen In Hyun and Jang Ok Jung. The book was spread to the masses to gain the people's support for Queen In Hyun's reinstatement. King Sukjong realizes Choi Suk Won can't read because she's holding the book upside down. Choi Suk Won - JOJ Ep 21Choi Suk Won pretends to be pregnant in ep 22. Queen Jang's brother Hee Jae attempts to poison her. She survives and he's arrested. King Sukjong bows to pressure and reinstates Queen In Hyun. Jang Ok Jung is demoted back to Hee Bin. Upon Queen In Hyun's return to the palace, she's greeted by Choi Suk Won. They both face off against Jang Hee Bin. Queen In Hyun Returns - JOJ Ep 22Only 2 more episodes to go.

So they have morphed Hee Bin from heroine to bad girl . Not exactly. This series has gone back and forth on how Jang Hee Bin is portrayed. I'd say, she's no saint but not really evil either. In the beginning, Jang Hee Bin was all about her love for King Sukjong. She wasn't greedy and didn't care about power. When the reality of life in the palace set in, that's when she became a darker person. She covets power to protect herself. She's made some bad decisions along the way, like whipping Maid Choi (Choi Suk Bin) for "sleeping" with King Sukjong. It seemed viewers complained about this and they've softened her up a bit in the last few episodes. This is probably Kim Tae Hee's strongest performance so far. I've always felt she's had the potential to be more than just a pretty face. You see it at times but not on a consistent basis. One of the problems with this series, and other romance sageuks, is they really only work if you completely ignore history. I don't mind a different take on Jang Hee Bin. Just wish it was better written. Take the situation with Choi Suk Bin for example. King Sukjong only pretends to sleep with her for political purposes. Queen Jang (JOJ) goes into a jealous fit and whips her. This is what leads to Choi Suk Bin being made a concubine. I understand that it's tough to sell the OTP to the viewing audience if he's jumping into bed with another woman. Still, why have CSB in the series at all if she's only there to be a pretend concubine? King Sukjong had several women in his life. If you're only going to sugarcoat it, just leave them out of the story. They've gone back and forth on Queen In Hyun too. One moment she's talking about upholding the honor of the royal family. The next she's scheming, through CSB and her supporters, how to get reinstated. I think they didn't want to mess with the sympathetic view Koreans have of QIH too much. So, they've chosen to make CSB more of the bad girl. I like Han Seung Yeon but she's miscast as CSB. She's not ready for this type of role. It's worth noting that this series is based on a novel by Choi Jung Mi. She's also the writer for the series. In the novel, Jang Hee Bin dies the same way she does in history. Not sure what they will do for the drama.
