Thanks for the update, nuwildcats-- but really only one showtime at 10:30 pm!?!? Not that I would have minded seeing TOP late in the evening ,but I hope that is not the way they will go with future Korean movie showtimes! To answer your question, nuwildcats-- I don't have 11 birds, only 1 ferret-- but the number comes from the age of my son when I signed up on this board-- he is now one month away from turning 16-- time flies when you are having fun! May I ask you a question?? Is your name from attending Northwestern? My daughter is currently going to Northwestern, and when I saw your name, that is what I thought of!

No Korean films are scheduled through next Thursday, 1/30, at least. <sigh> bird11, a ferret? (You're only the second person I've ever known with a pet ferret.) Yep, an NU, and U of Chgo alum, too, but NU's athletics and social life are definitely more fun! Not much prejudice on my end but your daughter sure made a terrific choice. If she wasn't a social butterfly to begin with, she'll certainly be when she finishes. Good luck to her in her schoolwork!

To think I am only the second person you have every known to own a ferret (she's an albino, too!), but this is actually the 2nd ferret I have ever owned! (Bird's a nickname from a long time ago) You were right about the social life at NU, my daughter was not a social butterfly at all until she got there, then she joined a "live action roleplay" group called DCP Productions and a board game group and I hear more about those things than any of her classes! She's made the Dean's List 3 out of 4 times so far, so she must like the classes, too!

Just got off the phone with Niles' box office. The Suspect will be running through next Thursday. Through 1/22/2013, it is only scheduled for one showing each day -- at 10:30pm. 10:30 pm?? Then they won't get many customers, and they'll decide that it isn't worth it to show Korean movies. sigh. Well, I'm not going anywhere these days, so I feel sorry for businesses needing paying customers. Too cold, too often snowy. I hope my car starts tomorrow; haven't used it in more than a week. Maybe closer to 2 weeks. This winter has been rough.

No Korean films are expected through next Thurs, 2/06.
ginnycat, amen to that! (and I promise not to ask if you have 5 cats).
bird11, Homework-intensive programs need social outlets. Good for your daughter on the dean's list (altho it's the getting there and staying there that makes it worthy, except on grad school applications).

DH wouldn't let me get even a pair of cats. He thought two cats would get into more trouble than one, I think. ;-D Aw, would cats get into trouble?? heh!

Starting Fri, 2/07, The Attorney will be screened. (Release Date: December 18, 2013; Runtime: 127 min) This is an original by web-toon artist Yang Woo-seok who is also the debuting director. (hancinema) The title character is basically a middle-aged, good-natured man who wants to do right by his friends but is forced to step up when extreme torture is involved in the gaining of evidence. From hancinema.net's review: "... The Attorney has strong performances and a compelling storyline- but to be entirely honest it isn't that original or gamebreaking a concept in storytelling terms. In terms of messaging and emotional power, though, this is an excellent film that does a lot to dispel naive notions about the inherent justice of the system and why us normal folk should simply stay out of the way. Woo-Seok could have chosen to do that. He instead decided to fight for what's right. After all, if the supposedly good-natured everymen don't stand up for what's right, who else is there?" Of note: On January 19, 2014, [movie] surpassed 10 million ticket sales in South Korea. The movie is only the 10th film as of January 19, 2014 to surpass 10 million ticket sales in South Korea. (asianwiki) For info on cast: asianwiki.com/The_Attorney_%28Korean_Movie%29Showtimes for Fri, Sat and Sun are: 10:35 am 1:35 pm 4:35 pm 7:35 pm 10:35 pm

I called AMC to learn this week's showtimes and look what I found? Surprise! (President's Day showings are holiday admission fees) The Attorney today only will be shown at 7:35 pm and 10:35 pm, but tomorrow and Wednesday only will change to: 7:00 pm and 10:00 pm. ---------- A second Korean film has been added to AMC's roster: Miss Granny, starring familiar K-granny, Na Moon-hee. Directed by Hwang Dong-hyeok. Genre: Comedy. (RSK release date: 1/23/2014) Runtime: 124 mins. Today only showtimes: 4:20 pm, 7:30 pm, and 10:40 pm Tues-Wed, confirmed showtimes: 12:30 pm, 3:35 pm, 6:45 pm, and 9:55 pm Cranky 73 y/o Miss Granny steamrolls her DIL into a hospital and the family gets ready to put her away, too. After posing for a self-portrait, she mysteriously transforms into her 20 y/o but still-crabby self. The movie is about her adventures, including joining her grandson’s heavy metal band and transforming it into a pop group. " Miss Granny is selected as one of the most anticipated upcoming Korean movies in January 2014. From teenagers to seniors, it is a movie that all family members can enjoy together." (hancinema.net) "The film shares characteristics with [other] high grossing comedies: Funny and unique characters, a well-structured story that will make you laugh and cry, and the cast’s amazing performance. Miss Granny has all the essential elements that appeal to everyone regardless of age. www.hancinema.net/korean_movie_Miss_Granny.php#synopsisFrom The New York Times review, "This weird comedy meanders into heartfelt, complex areas about the regrets, attachments and abandonment of the aged." www.nytimes.com/2014/01/31/movies/miss-granny-directed-by-hwang-dong-hyuk.htmlIt's a good thing I intermittently check back with AMC about current movies and showtimes. Their Korean schedule is s-o-o weird and unexpected!

It's been so snowy this winter, not exactly driving weather, more like stay home and shovel again. It would be nice if they had another Korean film festival in decent weather. I think I saw Chunhyang once. It was beautiful. I rented it from Video Adventure, which has gone out of business. Here's another description of Chunhyang (but I may have seen a different version, because I don't remember it being comedic): The Servant, screening on Saturday, February 25th at 6:50pm, is Kim Dae-woo's adaptation of a Korean pansori tale from the 17th and 18th centuries called "Chunhyangseon," which has been adapted numerous times, most recently in Im Kwon-taek's Chunhyang. Kim's erotic 18th-century period piece is decidedly more sensual and comedic than its predecessors--an O. Henry-esque social climbing satire with a steamy undercurrent.Read more: twitchfilm.com/2012/01/nyc-happenings-ny-korean-film-festival-2012.html#ixzz2v1YuEkyQ

Slightly off topic, feihu posted once here about a film that ended up on the Korean Festival's film schedule (but had already screened before I learned of the Festival) - "Treeless Mountain". So the Festival film choices were excellent! Skokie-Niles Township honors a different ethnic culture annually, so who knows when a Korean Festival will roll around again?
Thanks for your comments on "Chunhyang."
