Was a reason given as to why Choi Minsik refused to reprise the role? No official reason, but there was an interview shortly after movie's success where Choi Minsik said something along the line of he felt like he wasn't good enough to play YSS.

I previously wrote that Changdae was a fictional character when I first posted the info, but I've edited that part today as I've just learned that he was a historical person who is mentioned in Jeong Yakjeon's book as a friend he made during his exile. Difference between the movie and the historical Changdae is that he was actually someone around Jeong Yakjeon's age during exile while he is depicted as a young man in the movie. Just watched this movie and I give the movie an A+. It's a traditional historical. The movie was No.1 in Korean Box Office for about 2 weeks after it was released. It was praised as an example of model historical after the whole Joseon Exorcist scandal.

Most historicals I have seen involve political intrigue and sword fights. Political intrigue plays a part in Jeong Yakjeon's backstory as his exile is the reason he's at where he's at, but it looks like this movie is primarily about life in a fishing village.
Correct me if I'm wrong about that.

#1 at the box office, what great news! Shows there's a demand for this stuff...are you listening KBS/MBC/SBS?
Thanks for the info about the movie, hopefully it will come out on DVD with English subtitles. I still need to watch that Sado movie from a while back that you guys said was so good, and I'll add this to the list.

It also covers Catholic Perseuction of the time at the beginning of the movie, which is pretty interesting. It's the reason why Jeong Yakjeon was exiled in the first place. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catholic_Persecution_of_1801The director of this movie also directed Sado. No wonder why this movie was so good. Another good traditional historical movie is The Fortress en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fortress_(2017_film)

I was surprised to learn that this was the same guy who did Hwangsanbeol and Pyongyangseong. I think those films are meant to be parodies of the historicals These two are definitely parodies, yes. Although they are supposed to be parodies and should not be taken seriously, I have to point out one flaw from the movies. I'm sure nobody spoke in any modern Korean regional dialects back then, but Baekje people speaking in Jeolla Dialect is wrong. Baekje's capital cities were today's Seoul for 500 years and 200 years in today's Chungcheong region. The royals and main nobles of Baekje never had anything to do with today's Jeolla region. Making them speak in Chungcheong dialect would have been more accurate, not Jeolla. The director probably wanted to reflect the modern rivarly between Jeolla and Gyeongsang region in a historical, but this gave the wrong impression to many Koreans who aren't familiar with ancient history. Many people who aren't really interested in history thought Baekje's capital and main areas were in Jeolla province because of this movie.

A little late to the game here---- but I finally got around to watching "Train To Busan" with my daughter tonight. I really liked it.... my daughter thought the zombies were good actors, so I told her she needed to watch "The Kingdom", because I thought those zombies were way better....
