Hey, if anyone wants to help a grumpy person, maybe you can help me. I missed Episode 144, which is the one BEFORE S-M finds out he has cancer. I have a few questions:
1) Why did S-M go to the doctor in the first place? He tells the doctor in Ep. 145 he's not feeling any pain, so why'd he go?
2) Why did M-J tell him he couldn't see the Weepy Child that day? Was she trying to set some kind of schedule?
3) Drinking? Liver cancer, and he's DRINKING?
Okay, the last one's not a question, it's an observation.
Thanks.

Hey there Bo,
Hope this helps…
(1) His new place of employment sent SM for a physical and his blood tests came back with a high level of "I don’t remember...white blood cells?" that indicated something was wrong and further testing was needed, which is when the cancer was discovered.
(2) I believe you’re correct. That’s my understanding as well. MJ does not want SM running to the house every time Yuna has a tantrum because she wants to see SM.
(3) Yes, drinking would be a no-no at this point, but SM turned to booze to help him deal with the devastating news he had just received...he had no where else to turn...no one to talk to...he's lost everything and now, the possibility of losing his life as well...his only companion was the bottle.

The levels that tripped the doctor's alarm system in Sang-min's bloodwork were liver enzymes that were extremely elevated, indicating poor liver function. The doctor followed up by ordering an MRI (what it looked like), I guess of that area.
As for MJ, I think if it was up to her, SM would never see any of them again. It probably burns her behind that Yuna cries for SM and pines to see him. Did you see the look on MJ's face when Yuna agreed to go to the ballet class after SM told her to? It must drive her to distraction that Yuna listens to SM and not to her. She was so angry, she told him he couldn't see Yuna the next day, even though he promised her he'd come. MJ claimed Yuna would forget all about it the next day (yeah, right!) and only if Yuna nagged to see SM would MJ call him. So when she did call him the next day w/ Yuna pitching a fit ("forced" to call him, is how MJ put it), it really griped her when he didn't drop everything the second she called to run over there.
It must get MJ really crazy that she can't control SM any more.

Thanks, Jade and Luvz--that's just what I neeeeeeeeded. I've noticed, too, Luvz, how he turns to the bottle when he needs to deal with any situation. In fact, I find this particular Korean drama disturbing because that seems to be how EVERYONE deals with EVERYTHING. (Except for M-R, who runs around stealing stuff and crying, and the grandmas, who BEAT YOU UP. ;D) And Jade, you are so right about M-J and Yuna. She pours herself onto the kid (in her own deranged way) and gets no respect, and all S-M has to do is arch an eyebrow and the kid's a little soldier for him. But he does try to deal with Yuna in a reasonable manner, and maybe that's why she responds to him. Again, thanks so much. Bo PS - do you guys have trouble with words being replaced with "thingy"? For instance, in this post, the first word I put in for "arch" was the word that means that, and also rooster, and also part of a man. And one time before, I was trying to use the word for an eating implement that has a bowl-shaped interior (sthingy) and it comes up "thingy" == see?

Hey Bo -- about the word-changing thing...
Yes, it will do that on you sometimes. The word you couldn't get to come up --- see-oh-see-kay--right?---there's a dictionary in the program the posting system uses to censor words that might (or are) be considered profane or obscene, and it will give you a substitute. That particular word you refer to is one that won't go through...even if it's used totally innocently, or part of another word that's innocent.
For instance, if you want to refer to the kind of party someone might have where people come over just for alcoholic drinks and light refreshments, like hor's d'oevres, you can't use the word for that. I heard that someone else once tried to refer to a certain very tall building that's downtown on N. Michigan Av and has an observation deck on the 95th floor (and is NOT the Sears Tower), it wouldn't accept it because of those particular four letters in there.
A few weeks ago, I had a post about what Ja-young should've done when Woon-kyu confronted her about whether Ji-min was the son of Sang-min. I suggested she should've told him she had a fling after SM dumped her in an attempt to get him out of her mind and JM resulted from that little indiscretion. I said so what if WK thinks JY is an ess-el-you-tee, what does she care? When I previewed the post, it had changed the word I spelled out just now to "very friendly person"...LOL!
I changed it to tramp, and it accepted that. Go figure.
It's a little temperamental about some words, which is why it's a good idea to preview all messages before you post them to be sure the censor hasn't tampered w/ anything.

Jade: It's good to know that this system censors. I haven't gotten into the practice of previewing my posts, but I will definitely start doing that now. I don't want to end up with The John Han-rooster Building. Thanks.
Bo: That's so true. As I think about it now, the bar HAS been frequented by several of the characters on YH whenever facing a problem. Once the problem surfaces, the first thing they do is go to the bar and order rooster-tails. (sorry, but I couldn't resist) ;D

Btw, I had not known about the eating implement used for soup and cereal, etc. I tried it myself and you're right, Bo...it does come out "sthingy", which is weird. I gave it some thought and figured maybe it's because it has "poo" in the middle, so I tried just writing poo, and it went through fine. For the life of me, I can't figure what would be w/ that word, or any part of that word the censor would have a problem w/.
Weird.
To Luvz: LOL about Hanrooster Building and going out to a bar for roostertails. I couldn't have resisted either! ;D

While nosing around in the 'Administrative Functions' (I always feel scared that I'll break something when I go there), I found the list of tabu words. Most of them indeed deserve to remain so, but I removed the ones that have caused the behavior described in this thread. Thus, one should now be able to post that Dick Cheney ate with a spoon during his visit to the John Hancock building.
About the drinking: don't they have dram shop laws in Korea? Here, whoever over-serves someone at a bar is liable for anything that happens to them due to their drunkeness. Plus, I don't think you can have the bartender leave the bottle with you here, whereas Sang-min keeps pouring himself drink after drink.

I don't think I've laughed so hard in a very long time. Rooster-tails, indeed. Thanks for everyone's input (and for Soju's allowing me to write things about the Vice Prez ) Bo
