MOE Ep.13 [You thought I'd NEVER get this done. So did I. Happy birthday to me.]
Not only does Jangil have to deal with Soomi’s machinations, he is assigned, with Joonho, to investigate Sunwoo’s case. Even though one of Jangil’s other big cases has come to a satisfactory conclusion, and he’s famous in Seoul, he’s miserable. President Jin expects Jangil to “handle everything” and get PJ out of trouble. Then, Jangil calls Sunwoo, apologizes for striking him at the party and assures him he’s investigating PJ personally. “Everything will be cleared up to your satisfaction.”
Jangil scams his team by setting up an underground investigation while telling PJ how to fool the investigators. Then he appears to contemplate suicide. PJ has his own scam running, and tells Sec Cha to get some “cunning people who can keep a secret” and forget about David Kim’s Australian investment.
Yoonjoo wants Soomi to do a photo op with Jangil. Soomi agrees, asking her to get “old friend David Kim“ too. Yoonjoo, very, very excited, sets it all up. Sunwoo comes but can’t do the photos because of Jangil’s investigation. Soomi looks all superior and smack, and after torturing Jangil awhile, tells Yoonjoo she won’t do it without Sunwoo. Jangil says he won’t either. Poor Yoonjoo finally blows her top with Soomi.
During this meeting, DK asks Soomi if she took any of his Braille pages. She claims it was an alphabet page that she wanted for a painting, but didn’t use. Sunwoo looks suspicious. Soomi offers a painting to Sunwoo and pulls out one that looks like it might be an injured Sunwoo, but it’s some girl. Sunwoo doesn’t like it, tells her to give it to Jangil, and leaves.
Jangil wants to know if she’s having fun yet. She may be ignorant, she says, but she’s pretty sure what Jangil did was called “attempted murder.” Jangil falls weakly to his knees; Soomi at least has the grace to look abashed.
Sunwoo, Taejoo and Sec Koon do a memorial at Mr Kim’s “death tree,” where a dove arrives and perches on the branch. Taejoo advises Sunwoo that "these rotten trees" (PJ, Dad Lee & Jangil) will destroy themselves, but Sunwoo still wants to proceed. Soomi and her dad both get summonses to testify, which upsets Dad a lot because he “can’t lie to those smart people.”
Before that, Soomi has tea with Mrs PJ, and, touched by the kindness of this person of her mother’s age, starts Mrs PJ’s portrait. Yoonjoo arrives and, in front of Soomi, wonders why PJ won’t invest in David’s tip. Mrs PJ thinks she’ll do so behind PJ’s back maybe, and the two go on to plot to do this.
In Pusan, Taejoo answers David’s phone. It’s PJ. When David calls him back, PJ tries to get him to admit Taejoo answered (but he won’t). That night, Sunwoo has one of his nightmare/headaches, and he can’t see. Sec. Koon blames stress over the petition.
Sunwoo arrives for his deposition. It’s an elaborate, formal set-up, and it is filmed. Jangil’s surprising--to everyone there--first statement is, “We went to the same high school, but I didn’t recognize you at first.” Jangil clearly tries to make Sunwoo look delusional. As he leaves, Sunwoo tosses over his shoulder that Jangil should subpoena all workers from that day at Jin’s house.
David Kim and Jiwon waste a bunch of time not talking to, but longing for, each other. [Stupid stupids.] Soomi plays her magic tricks when she extracts Jiwon’s photo from David’s desk and puts it into a file on Jiwon’s desk. Jiwon finds it and after a couple days of trying to figure out what to do and feeling sick and upset, finally asks Sunwoo what he thinks he is playing at. He begs her to let him explain, but she cuts him off with, “You are not the Sunwoo I knew.”
****
When Jiwon took out her “storage box of Sunwoo” and thought about his last letter to her, it seemed she must have thought about it every day since he left her. On top of that, there’s Mr. Choi’s tantalizing last letter to SCHMUCK SCHMUCK SCHMUCK SCHMUCK I mean Sunwoo. When will THAT be brought out?
