So the burning question for all is if you had a top 10 or even 20 of Hysterical ...whoops !!!Historical K Dramas where would SeonDeok fall in ?.
I think Princess Ja Myung Go is worth checking out not as good as QSD but much much better than IE .
And we do have two 90 minute Seondeok spin offs about the young Deokman coming around Oct 2010 .

Well, here's how I'd rank the historicals I've seen. I loved just about all of them, so I ranked them by their negatives.
1. Queen Seonduk. Like Mary Poppins, practically perfect in every way.
2. Jumong (tied with Dae Jo Young) The actor who played Jumong was charismatic, Seosono was a terrific heroine, and every episode told a good story. It loses points for the tedious and contrived Yesoya-as-hostage subplot.
2. Dae Jo Young - Because of its length the plot had its ups and downs, but what other show had so many watchable, memorable, entertaining characters, and who can resist DJY's soulful eyes?
4. Age of Warriors - I didn't start watching this one until 70 or so episodes in, so I guess I missed the best bad guys. Vastly entertaining even without them, and I'm still mourning for Kyung Dae Seung.
5. Yi Soon Shin - If the writers had concentrated on YSS and his men, this might have been number 1. But there was too much padding with tedious subplots and political intrigue. Still, my heart raced every time I heard someone yell, Paamporaaaaah!
6. Seodongyo - As cute and fluffy as its hero and heroine, this show is K-Drama-Lite, but I loved it. I think this is the only show I've watched where the lovers got to be happy together
7. Emperor of the Sea - It started off really well, but degenerated after they all moved back to Shilla. I never "got" the love story, and the ending was awful.
8. Great King Sejong - Bland and disappointing, even with an appealing title character. It was merely OK.
Iron Empress (no rating) - I'm going to be harsh here. I stopped watching this at around Episode 20. The only interesting character, Psycho-King, died early on, the women seem to be always yelling instead of acting, the characters' hair styles and make-up look like a Manga, and the lead men look pudgy and going to seed (not surprising, since all the good-looking men seem to be down in Shilla).
Dae Jang Geum - I've only seen the first 18 episodes so I don't know where this one will fall yet. So far I'd put it in the cute and fluffy category with Seodongyo, entertaining but not compelling.

2. Jumong (tied with Dae Jo Young) The actor who played Jumong was charismatic, Seosono was a terrific heroine, and every episode told a good story. It loses points for the tedious and contrived Yesoya-as-hostage subplot. I thought the King Kumwa story was the best part of Jumong. His love for Jumong, but inability to punish his own sons for their crimes, and his inability to give up Jumong's mother (was that Yesoya?), made him a really tragic character. I don't normally like tragedy, but his life story was very moving. I liked the Sosuhno story too, with her tribe as travelling merchants. And wasn't her husband the same actor who played Munno? The one thing I didn't like was all the mystical mumbo-jumbo, with the Sorceress being the King's co-ruler. Finish watching Dae Jang Geum, and you'll see another. And this is just the kind of drama I like, which focusses not just on a love story, but on the central character's intelligence, in this case, a scientist/engineer, who advances the state of technology in his time. And also, like Dae Jang Geum, the cental character is fearless and notable for his perfect integrity. Dae Jang Geum is by far and away the best K-Drama I've ever seen. Nothing else even comes close. I certainly wouldn't call it cute and fluffy. Jang Geum suffers more than any human should ever have to, but perseveres in spite of it, and still achieves her own happiness. She's the most heroic character I've seen in any drama.

Brouhaha, I don't even have a top 10. The number of historical K-dramas I have watched are less than the fingers of one hand. Namely.... DJG Jumong POTW QSD ;D Contemporary drama ... just one. Dr something, some woman doc, same actress as the one in QSD. The rest are just .... too 'dramatic' for my taste.

The one thing I didn't like was all the mystical mumbo-jumbo, with the Sorceress being the King's co-ruler. Yesoya was Jumong's first wife. And yes, Munno and Soseono's husband were one and the same. I liked the mythological elements since this story took place at such an early point in Korean history. The Romans and Greeks were making sacrifices to their gods, and Buddhism and Confucianism had not been introduced yet, so I liked that they showed how the Koreans may have worshiped at this point in time. Having seen the three-legged raven as the symbol of Kogoryeo in Dae Jo Young, I enjoyed watching the myth of its birth. I was willing to suspend my disbelief.

The Chinese Version of QSD is Widescreen and really improves the drama big time ,it makes it look like a film . But its Dubbed in Mandarin with Canto subs .So pass on that .

Geez, mugwump, I just saw where you ranked Jumong so much higher than Dae Jang-geum. I have to say, I'm stunned. I thought Jumong was pretty good, but dragged so far down by the unbelievability (in any context) of the lead character and the general lack of acting chops of his portrayer. Dae Jang-geum was superior in every way, even considering the extra episodes they stuffed in there about the kitchen ladies. Fluffy? Really? LOL.
And then, you put it above Yi Sun-shin? You actually found Jumong a more compelling hero than Yi Sun-shin? But no, you say the writing "wandered"--well, yes it did. But even considering that, the story was much more interesting than Jumong. And more believable. And as I say, the hero wiped up Jumong's snot-nose boy with one hand.

I can't rank Queen Seonduk yet, since I have only seen one or two eps so far. There are no more flying, glowing, eggs, I trust. I'm struck at the non-ranking of 'Emperor Wang Guhn' in this thread. It was one of the first Korean Dramas I ever watched, first without subtitles, and later, with subs (which revealed how much I had mis-understood the first time ). Maybe it's just because it's several years old now. I realized this when I saw Kim Youngjul in 'IRIS' recently, and couldn't help but note how much older he looked (but it could have been differences in the makeup he wore). And he didn't have all that grey hair in EWG ;D* * Of course, his head was shaved in EWG.

Bo Completely agree about Dae Jang Geum. Except I didn't mind any extra episodes about the kitchen ladies, particularly Lady Han, whom I adored. But Mugwump has only watched a third of the series so far, so perhaps she will revise her opinon upon seeing the whole thing. Is there anyplace where I can see this Yi Sun Shin drama? The whole thing, not the reader's digest version?
