Reincarnation is sure is the trend, even in Japan. It used to be time travel before.

Not expecting too much of this except for a scene where the Hwarang has to put on his death makeup because the 2016 Hwarang romance drama apparently doesn't have that at all (missed opportunity!!)

Is the death make up an actual thing?

Not expecting too much of this I wouldn't expect much from a drama that involves reincarnation, either. It isn't a real historical drama and they'll probably wear fantasy costumes in the scenes involving Shilla and Gaya. This drama is actually an adaptation of a webtoon with the same name. The only historical people in the webtoon according to the wiki page are Kim Sadaham and Mugwan, who were actual Hwarangs that served in the Gaya conquest campaign. These two will probably appear in the drama as well since they seem to be important figures in the original webtoon. Other historical person that might make an appearance is King Jinheung, who was the king of Shilla at the time of Gaya conquest. Is the death make up an actual thing? I know that makeup was a thing, not so sure about "death" makeup.

I seem to recall from Queen Seonduk, that the hwarangs put on the makeup before going into a battle in which they expected to die, so that people would say how beautiful they looked in death.

so that people would say how beautiful they looked in death. This part is fiction created by QSD writers. The QSD drama is basically just Korean Mulan using real historical figure names. Almost no history in it whatsoever.

Oohh - I only assumed it was real because I saw it in Three Kingdoms and King's Dream too - is there any historical explanation why then? Was it to distinguish each other in battle?

Oohh - I only assumed it was real because I saw it in Three Kingdoms and King's Dream too - is there any historical explanation why then? Was it to distinguish each other in battle? There isn't any explanation in the original historical record. Some speculate it was done to show their determination to the battle while some speculate it was done to distinguish themselves over lower-class soldiers.

TVING Obscene Dating Story(2024)
Director : Lee Gwangyoung(first historical setting drama)
Writer : Seo Eunjeong(first historical setting drama, usually known for writing sitcoms)
Time period : Fictional kingdom
Synopsis : Princess leaves the palace to find a future husband after reading an erotic novel named "Obscene Dating Story"
Go Ara(Aro in KBS Hwarang) has been cast as Princess Hwari
Jang Ryul(Asayon in tvN Arthdal Chronicles) has been cast as Choi Hwan(the lover)
They started making all fictional characters Joseon dynasty dramas after the Joseon Exorcist scandal and now they are even making dramas about a fictional kingdom. This way, they're free from any kind of historical distortion scandal, can dress up in any fantasy style clothing, and have all kinds of hairstyles.
This drama isn't the first drama about a fictional kingdom. There was the Arthdal Chronicles few years back, which has a second season coming up soon.
Last year, there was tvN drama Alchemy of Souls, which was apparently very successful.
I'm guessing they're making this drama based on the success of Alchemy of Souls.
And if this drama becomes successful, there are probably gonna be even more fictional kingdom dramas coming.
I didn't post any information on Alchemy of Souls drama when it aired because I didn't even know this drama existed.
I'll post info below in case anyone's interested.
tvN Alchemy of Souls (2022)

Synopsis : Set in a fictional country called Daeho, the series is about the love and growth of young mages as they overcome their twisted fates due to a forbidden magic spell known as the "alchemy of souls", which allows souls to switch bodies
Lee Jaewook as Jang Wook
Jeong Somin as Mudeok(a.k.a Jin Buyeon) - Season 1
Go Yunjeong as Jin Buyeon - Season 2
The "Jin Buyeon" character is able to switch bodies, which is why a different actress plays her in Season 2.
Season 1 aired between June and August of 2022
Season 2 aired between December 2022 and January 2023

And what exactly is it about Yi Bangwon that makes him popular now? It isn't just Korea who keeps making dramas about same time period by the way. Every Asian country has their favorite time period to make a drama out of. For Korea, it's Late Goryeo-Early Joseon, except with different person as main characters. You get Jeong Dojeon as main character for one drama, then Lee Bangwon as main character in King of Tears, and now Wongyeong as the main lead for the upcoming TVN drama. For Japan, it's the Sengoku period and the time period that follows briefly after Hideyoshi's unification, except with different person as main characters. You get Kuroda Kanbei as main character for one drama, Sanada Nobushige as main character for one drama, and now they have Tokugawa Ieyasu as the main lead for currently airing NHK historical. For China, it's the Three Kingdoms period, except with different person as main characters. You get Zhuge Liang as main character for one drama, Zhou Yu as main character for the Battle of Red Cliff film, and Sima Yi as the main character for 2017 drama The Advisors Alliance. But of course, I think Korea overdoes its favorite time period more than Japan and China do theirs. I wouldn't be surprised to see another drama about the same era 2 years after the Wongyeong drama airs.

I always thought Japan had too many Bakumatsu dramas, though I suppose Sengoku period is competition on that front

I wouldn't be surprised to see another drama about the same era 2 years after the Wongyeong drama airs. Its funny the current Taiga Dou Suru Ieyasu a bomb . The ratings are horrific . Its sad because i think its one of the best Taiga's since Kanbei in 2014 . It has lots of small battles and incidents that are usually left out. so the next Taiga is about Murasaki Shibu and Fujiwara Michizane. The main theme is the creation of Tale of the Genji. No big budget for this one so most of it is interior shots. It turns out viewers complained that there were no battles so NHK backtracked to include pirate raids . so 2024 is about an author,2121 was about the first capitalist in Japan so 2025 is about a publisher . So with Hikaru Kimi ending in 2024 than Berabou-Tsuta Jyuu eiga no yume banashi is about Tsutaya Juzaburo the first publisher of ukiyo-e . He grew up in the Yoshiwara with the courtesans and made his fortune on erotic art or porn (don't get carried away NHK is a family network ). He discovered and published all the great ukiyo-o artists before a change of government to more conservative landed him in big trouble . The underlying theme is that NHK seem to be moving away from wars and samurai in favor of talented commoners . Seitan Wo Tsuke (2021 capitalist and Idaten (2019 about Olympians ) have done better than the Sengoku/Bakamatsu dramas so thats where NHK are headed . I wonder how long before we get more Her Jun's and dramas like that on a more regular basis ? .
