Skimmed through first 13 episodes of this drama in 6 hours today and it's the closest thing SBS ever made that resembles a traditional historical. Story wise, it's mostly fiction with some historical events shown. However, it's the first SBS historical I've seen without fusion/fantasy style costumes. First time I've seen SBS with accurate looking costumes. The depiction of class system is accurate. (Not allowed to call your middle-class father by 'father' if you are an illegitimate child born from a slave) Sexual inequality is also depicted perfectly. (Women not allowed to eat on same table as men. I don't recall seeing this in other historical dramas. Not even in KBS traditionals.) There's still the lone girl fighter like every other historical, but she mostly just shoots enemies with a flintlock, which is more realistic than other dramas where girls are physically fighting with a sword. Many of the dialogues sound very like the kind of dialogues from Jeong Dojeon. You can easily notice the drama was written by writer of Jeong Dojeon if you have watched JD before. Overall, I would say this drama is somewhere between traditional historical and fusion historical. The director of this drama was also the director for Joseon Exorcist. Imagine going from this to that disaster. The traditional historical elements of this drama are probably all from Jeong Dojeon's writer judging from the director's past fusion historicals like Six Flying Dragons though. Will attempt to skim through the rest tomorrow. Just finished this drama. Skipped every single love-storyline scenes. My overall impression is it's the most "traditional historical look-alike" drama SBS ever made, but I can't help but to think it's almost like a SBS version of Mr. Sunshine. Same film set built by Mr. Sunshine production team was used for this drama as well. The drama is mostly fiction, but it does try to stay accurate to history as much as possible when depicting historical characters and events. (Thanks to Jeong Dojeon's writer) But then again, there probably isn't too much history to show besides the ones they showed in the drama as this whole drama takes place during one year only(1894). Fun fact : Actress playing main character's mom(young QSD's step-mom from 2009 Queen Seondeok) is only 1 year older than him in real life. I took the plunge and started watching this. i was hooked by the fact they took a traditional song from the era (Bird,Bird,Bluebird )and used it on the soundtrack . This is not saying much but its one of the better historical drama's of the last few years .Of course its got cliche's and its been described as a Korean Spartacus (minus gladiators). I don't get that analogy as this is 1894 not the Roman Republic . its decent so far not great but watchable .

KBS Red Heart(2022)
Writer : Park Pilju(first historical setting drama)
Time period : Joseon Dynasty
Synopsis : Political battle between fictional king and fictional minister who enthroned him
* All characters are fictional
Lee Jun(from boy idol band MBLAQ) has been cast as Lee Tae, a fictional king succeeding his father King Seonjong(also a fictional king) who was enthroned after dethronement of a tyrant king
Jang Hyeok(Lee Bangwon in JTBC My Country) has been cast as Park Gyewon, a fictional minister who enthroned Lee Tae's father King Seonjong after deposing tyrant king
Park Gyewon wants to make Joseon a constitutional monarchy while Lee Tae wants to preserve royal authority.
Looks like Park Gyewon is based off Jeong Dojeon while Lee Tae's character is based on Lee Bangwon.
Lee Seonggye was enthroned by Jeong Dojeon. Lee Bangwon wanted to preserve royal authority.
This drama : King Seonjong was enthroned by Park Gyewon. Lee Tae wants to preserve royal authority.

truth what's your opinion about this? You think anybody will watch it, with no connection to real history? Seems weird that KBS would commit to this after such a long drought with no historicals at all. I would think they'd want to have a big thing or person from real history to hook people in.

Seems weird that KBS would commit to this after such a long drought with no historicals at all. I would think they'd want to have a big thing or person from real history to hook people in. By "long drought with no historicals at all", I'm assuming you mean traditional historicals? Because they've been producing non-traditional historicals(fusion or all fiction) every year, with the most recent one being "River Where The Moon Rises", a fusion "historical" about On Dal and Princess Pyeonggang. This drama is not a traditional historical. The traditional historical will be about King Taejong as I posted earlier. There are other fictional historicals just like this coming up this year from KBS such as "Yearning" and "Reminder of Moon When Flower Blooms." This drama is one of them. People who watches these type of dramas will watch them as always. Many TV stations are leaning towards producing all fictional-character "historicals" now as they can be free from historical distortion critics, especially more so now after the whole Joseon Exorcist scandal.

I guess what I meant was an all-fiction historical that didn't go all gimmicky with the fusion stuff or the teenage love triangle or all that. Seems like that kind of thing is stuck between the poles, not enough to attract the hardcore true-history audience and also not enticing to the gimmick-lovers. Just seems like a strange time to try to do this, especially KBS since they're going to run the traditional one.
Maybe they're thinking they'll run this one after the Taejong one and hope they keep the whole audience.

So Ji Sub has been cast as the lead in the upcoming MBC series Dr. Lawyer. It's about a doctor turned medical malpractice lawyer. It'll air in 2022. --------------------- I don't like hospital or lawyer based shows (and this seems to combine the 2) but it's So Ji Sub so I'll check it out.

Wow a comedy historical? The past examples of trying to put humor into historical dramas are mostly pretty bleak to say the least. The people attempting this are brave or clueless or nuts (or maybe all three). I'll definitely try to watch the early episodes if they're posted online somewhere. Very curious about this.

Yoon Kye Sang and Seo Ji Hye have been cast in the Disney Plus series Kiss 6th Sense. It's about a woman that can see the future when she kisses someone. Looks like Disney is getting into Kdramas. Jung Hae In has been cast in the Watcha short series Unframed. It's about the daily life concerns of people in their 20's and 30's. Unframed will be the directorial debut of actor Lee Je Hoon. The Netflix series D.P starring Jung Hae In will be released on Friday, August 27. It'll be 6 episodes long. If D.P is being released this month, that means other Netflix series like Sea of Silence and My Name shouldn't be too far behind. Speaking of Jung Hae In, Snowdrop has been delayed until December. There was some controversy because it's set during the time of the Gwangju uprising. JTBC tried to assure people that it's a romance and not a political/historical drama but apparently the series was still delayed to make changes to the story.

Kdramas on Disney Plus?
It never occurred to me that entertainment industry monopoly Disney would try to get their hands on Kdramas
