Ep.56:
Hong, caught in the act of trying to fix the doctor, tells San he’s concerned about Wong Bin’s tonics. San wants Hong to butt out “in case something goes wrong,” but Hong continues his campaign on his sister’s behalf (because their entire family will be annihilated if she is caught). He has Dae-su secretly investigate the doctor. This comes in handy later, after Wong Bin and her lady stage a miscarriage at the party celebrating her pregnancy, when Dowager Hye demands that San investigate the murder of the royal offspring and the doctor wants to tell San the truth. Hong has evidence the doctor takes bribes and tells him he has to come up with a better explanation. But that’s later.
Tebi Mamah continues to try to wield influence, but San will have none of it. She is there when Sir Chae tells San that Lord Min (Jang’s sidekick) disappeared while being arrested.
Even though San is sure Lord Jang is too upright to have been involved, Hong wants full investigative authority. Fool me twice…but San agrees. So Hong drags in ministers rudely, and he questions Lord Jang disrespectfully by receiving him in socks with his hat removed. Jang thinks Hong is overstepping; Hong admits he’s targeting Norons who went against San.
When the ministers appeal to San for relief from Hong’s depredations, San backs Hong. If anyone resists investigation, they will be adjudged guilty, he says. Even Sir Chae privately wants San to rein in Sec’y Hong, but San wants Hong to make big mistakes and then learn from them.
Tebi Mamah also refuses to interfere, as either Hong or Jang will be hobbled so she can’t lose. Later, Sir Choi is revealed as the kidnapper. Tebi wants Min’s allegiance, Choi tells him. At the palace, Tebi swears to herself she’ll continue plotting.
Hong is wined and dined by the Norons he had arrested earlier. They want to assert their innocence. He says if they want to be trusted, they should shut up and support San’s reforms without question.
In Art-World, Tak and Lee compete for the Master’s praise in creating erotica. He seems to favor Tak. Also, Wong Bin continues torturing Chobi and Song.
During Wong Bin’s “pregnancy,” Hyeoui was sending/bringing her special juices and tonics, and so was Dowager Hye. Wong Bin seemed pretty touchy about it, and Lady Kim was suspicious, but Hyeoui thought it was because W-B was pregnant. Also, Wong Bin, in Song and Chobi’s presence, was told her brother wanted her to drink a motherwort tonic “5X a day.”
After the miscarriage, Hyeoui tells a grieving San that it’s all her fault for not conceiving herself or taking good enough care of Wong Bin. He reassures her—it’s the will of heaven. San, drinking himself silly in his office, receives a visit from Hong and reveals his hopes for the unborn child. He apologizes to Hong, who has the grace to look greatly abashed as he stumbles away. San sits up watching over Wong Bin all night.
Tebi Mamah’s lady espies Hong and the doctor plotting and thinks it strange, so she reports to Tebi. Tebi also finds it strange Hong is so calm about this, so she sends for her private physician—the one who helped her with Yeong-jo.
Dae-su finds Hong, drunk at the gisaeng house, and begs him to investigate. Hong tells him he’s falling deeper into a mire and cannot escape. The doctor comes to San and tells him the reason for the miscarriage was all the tonics given to Wong Bin by Queen Hyeoui.

Well. Wasn’t that nice.
Y’know, Secretary Hong is a complete asshole. And how about when San tells Sir Chae that Hong is San’s “most loyal subject”? Um, huh, I would have thought Sir Chae or possibly Mr. Nam.
