Ep.54 Sun 12/11 –
San’s theory? The murderers are gangs of ex-slaves, out for revenge against particularly abusive slaveowners. He sets a trap, which fails. DS+2 do a stakeout, with no results at first, but then the slaves strike, and Dae-su follows one back to the hideout. All are captured.
The slaves confess, and San triumphantly has Hong released. However, Hong visits the old dowager (we’ll call her “Tebi Mamah”—her title) to obtain the “hold” she has over Lord Jang, so he can get rid of him. (She has a letter he anonymously wrote saying old King Yeong-jo poisoned his predecessor.) She exults, knowing now she has power over Hong (and through him, San). But Eunuch Nam happens to see Hong go there and asks San about it.
The master painter is asked by Song to show her how to paint a plum tree. He tries to get alone with her, but Mr Tak and Mr Lee demand to learn something too. He shows them how to paint erotica. Tak objects (beneath his dignity). The master tells Tak he’s clearly a lascivious slut and should accept that.
Wong Bin took out her brother-related frustrations on her staff; so Queen Hyeoui warned Song off for the day. When Song returns after Hong’s release, Wong Bin begins a campaign to insult and disparage her to her face. Then she defaces the painting because it’s lotus flowers, and “lotus flowers grow in the mud.” When Song disagrees with her assessment, she slaps her, then starts to gag. It turns out she’s probably pregnant, and everyone is happy (except Lady Kim who rails against her mistress’s bad luck). When Song later congratulates San on the baby, he says yeah it’s a good thing for the family, but I don’t think I want to hear you say so.
So, the Norons find out only the slaves who actually murdered will be executed, the rest will serve light sentences. When Lord Jang protests, San further upsets him by saying their Confucian mores & laws are incorrect and he’s going to free the slaves.
Tebi Mamah tells Sir Choi she’s returning to live in the palace, and San is shocked when she shows up on his doorstep, but further shocked when Sec’y Hong declares he asked her to come there.
a) I think it’s Wong Bin, not Hong Bin, so I’ll use that instead.
b) Anyone have a better spelling for “Tebi Mamah”? Plz advise.
