Ep.47 Sat 11/19:
Insp Hong and Sir Chae worry that the Norons might use the old queen’s suicide attempt to get out of a tight spot, and San’s grandfather, indeed, works out a deal where the Norons won’t be completely destroyed (saving his foolish brother and his family’s reputation). Grandpa will get the scholars to rally against her execution, and Sir Choi will then influence San. This plan is put into effect, and protesting scholars overrun the city, upsetting Lady Hye, giving hope to the ministers and giving Princess another way to piss off Lady Hye. The situation is dangerous to San’s rule.
The new queen (Hyeoui) sees Song at the palace late at night and confuses her with talk of how she might not be able to paint in the palace. Lady Kim and the queen argue over Song being elevated, “once the trouble dies down in the palace.”
At a cabinet meeting, the remaining Norons demand San back down. San says all those people are guilty of treason, and the scholars are criminals invading the palace and will be punished. While they argue, the old Queen enters. Her attitude is one of submission toward San. She demands the ministers stop the “false rumors” that she was tortured and tried to kill herself—it was merely bad medicine. Later, she explains to Sir Choi that she just needs to live now, nothing is more important (so please get lost). So San’s orders are carried out. All the ministers are exiled to various places and will have to take poison, including San’s great-uncle. Lord Kim is only exiled (not killed). Princess is exiled and demoted to “illegitimate” status. (Whoa.)
As for the old queen, Insp Hong tells San he cannot pass a judgment on the queen now; she’s playing politics and so must he. So San tells her he doesn’t believe her new compliance but she’s toothless now so she can live.
The ministers are executed. San’s uncle takes his poison with his usual dignity. Insp Hong pays Jeong the compliment of drinking some of his family’s special wine with him before the execution and of witnessing Jeong’s death. Princess swears revenge on all who’ve killed her son.
Hong is (a) puzzled over San worrying so much about a stupid library building, and (2) upset that San only promoted DS+2 one rank, and so are they (especially the head guard). The other guards—most of whom received 2 or 3 ranks—also think it strange due to how much those three did for San. Later, San seems to taunt Dae-su about it, so D-S asks for a reason. San says it’s a secret, shows D-S his new library and promises all will be revealed. Soon.
