Ep.42:
All the ministers who are with the queen are thrown into the dungeons. The queen and Princess are placed under house arrest. When San learns that Y-J probably won’t recover, he asks to be placed in charge of the investigation.
All government offices are re-opened. There is fear of a general governmental bloodletting due to the conspiracy running so deep. Secy Jeong manages to convince Sir Choi to intervene, and Sir Choi gets San to punish only certain Norons due to fears of collapse of the government and revelation of Y-J’s dementia ruining his legacy. San tells Hong to make a sham of the tribunals he is supposed to run against the remaining parties. Hong says he won’t he won’t he won’t. Lady Hye, too, is upset with San and lets her anger out on him. Dae-su plus 2 get really really drunk and D-S almost goes postal. Sir Chae later tells Hong he should understand San’s motive of love for Yeong-jo.
San hides these decisions from the king, but Lady Hye, assuming he knows all, goes to the king and begs to know why he’s letting them get away with it again, placing San in danger. (Meanwhile, Lady Hye’s uncle tries to get back in good with her, but she tells him it’s not over yet and she’ll never forgive him. Uncle then tells his brother (Prime Minister) he’s going to get himself out of the corner no matter what.)
The king sends for San and says he’s going to finish the thing for him, since San does not have the stomach. He sends for the queen, who thinks she’ll now be forgiven. When she arrives and sees San and the Imperial Secretary, she gets the wind up but is still totally shocked when Yeong-jo dictates an imperial decree decrowning her and exiling her from the palace.
Two things irritate me. (1) Can’t say I’m impressed by the rushed, gaspy, whispery line readings when things get “bad” for a character. (2) Why do they keep repeating what the other person says? This takes about a third of the running time, I’d estimate. “I saw the pig!” “Did you say, I saw the pig!?” “Yes, I saw the pig!” Demmed pig run away by then.
