The explosives injure or kill most of the guards accompanying the royal retinue. Jeong Jo falls out of the carriage he's in. His eunuch Jeongbok attempts to use the confusion caused by the explosives to kill Jeong Jo but he's instead killed by Jeong Jo.
Back at western command post, everyone wonders what is going on. Minister of War Shim Hwan Ji sends Han Ju to assess the situation. He runs into Gu Myungnok and they conclude that In Bang's group must have double crossed them. Their plan is to kill everyone in In Bang's group and blame everything on them. The rear patrol guards, led by Gu Myungnok, then head towards Jeong Jo. Meanwhile, Jeong Jo is trying to make his way towards the western command post with the few guards he has left.
Han Ju returns to the western command post and reports that Jeong Jo has been attacked. That's when they begin to bicker about what to do next and who should have military command. Normally, in cases where something happens to the King, command is transferred to the minister of war. Since the rear patrol guards are on their way to Jeong Jo, they all agree to wait for word on Jeong Jo's status before taking any action.
In Hyung kills the rest of Jeong Jo's guards. Jeong Jo is knocked unconscious. In Hyung, In Bang and the rest of the group head to western Ammun Gate with Jeong Jo. Yak Yong and Chun Deuk head there as well.
Myungnok and the rear patrol guards have In Bang's group pinned down. Lord Dong shoots In Hyung, essentially leaving him behind, in an attempt to buy themselves time to escape with Jeong Jo. In Hyung hides from the rear patrol guards who decide to return to the western command post. In Hyung decides to follow the rear patrol guards. Myungnok and the rear patrol guards lost In Bang so they meet up with Jae Cheon, who was supposed to meet with Han Ju. They make him confess where Jeong Jo is and then kill him.
Han Ju will reports back to the western command post that Jeong Jo has been abducted. Shim Hwan Ji seizes control of the military. He has Lee Myungshik, Jo Shimtae and Chae Jegong apprehended and all royal guards disarmed. Jeong Jo's mother shows up and tries to stop them but is told by Hwan Ji that she should stay out of it.
In Bang and Lord Dong are once again pinned down by the rear patrol guards. Jeong Jo regains consciousness. Lord Dong is about to kill Jeong Jo when Chun Deuk appears and kills Lord Dong. In Bang escapes. Jeong Jo heads back to the western command post with Yak Yong and Chun Deuk. Chun Deuk gets shot from behind by In Bang's man. In Hyung shows up. He lets Jeong Jo and Yak Yong go. He entrusts Hyang bi to Yak Yong. In Bang shoots in Hyung, who then kills In Bang with his sword. The rear patrol guards chase after In Hyung. A wounded In Hyung and Myungnok engage in a sword fight and kill each other.
Jeong Jo and Yak Yong return to the western command post which is now under the control of Minister Shim and the five army garrisons. Everyone is surprised to see Jeong Jo. A Noron party official attempts to have Jeong Jo and Yak Yong apprehended but is instead killed as a traitor. The rest sacrifice him to save their own skin. Jeong Jo and the royal guards regain control of the western command post.
Jeong Jo orders to proceed with the drill as planned. The five army garrison are sent back to their posts outside the fortress.
The Queen Dowager receives a message from Hwaseong informing her that the attack on Jeong Jo failed.
Lady Hong, Jeong Jo's mother, recalls a conversation she had with her father, after Prince Sado's death, about Jeong Jo not ascending to the throne. He wants to follow party lines but she refuses to harm her son.
Lady Hong confesses to Jeong Jo that Prince Sado was killed because the Noron party was upset with him for siding with the Soron party. That the Noron party had helped King Yeong Jo so his hands were tied in the matter and he couldn't do anything to save him. That Prince Sado knew she was a Noron party member and that she was reporting everything he did to her father, Hong Bonghan. When Jeong Jo asks why his father let himself be killed, she explains that it was to protect him.
Lady Hong and Jeong Jo complete the ceremony to honor Prince Sado. She asks for his [Prince Sado] forgiveness. Jeong Jo returns to Hanyang. The End.
